Episode 111 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

Jason and I are back to wrap up the Democratic National Convention ad look ahead to the Republican National Convention. What did we think about the speeches at the Democratic Convention? What were the highlights? The lobbyist loopholes must be closed. John McCain’s choice for Vice President: What can we say? We have some breaking news. We think McCain’s choice is truly awful—there’s no stronger way of putting that. Sarah Palin is a tool—I can’t stand her. Given McCain’s indebtedness to the oil and gas industry, who else would he have picked? We have heaps of comments to close out the episode. We’ll be back with another political chat in a week.

Podomatic AmeriNZ 110 - Poltical Chat - Conventions Begin

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

The Democratic National Convention began today, so Jason and I are back to chat about politics. We begin by discussing the two main US parties, inspired by a listener question, and talk about how they evolved into the parties they are today—their differences then and now. This sets the stage for discussions about the party conventions (this also gave me a chance to sneak in a little story from my past). We look at the purpose of the conventions. Is the Republican McCain’s campaign doing anything unusual to target the Democrats during their convention? What do we think about Joe Biden? I actually met him once (did you hear who Jason and I met years ago?). We have a phone comment about our last political chat to end today’s episode with. We’ll be back next week, when we’ll go over comments to this episode. I’ll be posting a regular solo episode at the end of this week.

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

Today is all about marriage equality. I start out sharing my thoughts on the topic of marriage equality, then I move on to take on a religious wingnut and his loopy arguments. You may find something useful in all this to combat the bigots you encounter. But I do get a bit stroppy in my rhetoric, so be warned. A comment on another topic lets me tell you something about a tech development in New Zealand.

Today’s episode is mainly about the feedback from Episode 107 (thank you everyone!). First us, though, I give you some personal updates. I got a lot of really good feedback on how to proceed with my blog, podcast and upcoming videos. That also allows me to share some other things. Finally today, I have something about New Zealand to share. The next episode will be about marriage equality, and the next political podcast will probably be on Tuesday, 26 Aug rather than Friday 29 Aug.

First up today I talk about some of the additional things I want to do, beyond the podcast and blog, and I ask for your feedback. Not everyone wants the same sort of content, so this is your chance to speak up. Also, the Friday episode is moving to Thurday (NZ time), for now, at least.

First up today I talk about some of the additional things I want to do, beyond the podcast and blog, and I ask for your feedback. Not everyone wants the same sort of content, so this is your chance to speak up. Also, the Friday episode is moving to Thurday (NZ time), for now, at least.

Today I talk a bit about a car accident that my sister was recently in. It's a good reminder that people who live a far way from home—or overseas—have to be prepared for this kind of thing. Although many don't think about it, they should. I'm now planning on talking about comments from only the past two weeks.

It’s time again for a political podcast with Jason, but this one starts out with a special announcement. From there, it’s on to talk of Obama’s recent tour and McCain’s reaction to it, Condoleeza Rice in New Zealand and the Pacific, and then on to the vice presidential sweepstakes. We also talk about the scandals at the US Justice Department, and another story in the news that has nothing to do with politics.

Be sure to visit Jason’s blog!

The next political podcast with Jason is tentatively scheduled for posting on Friday, August 29 New Zealand time.

Today’s snack-sized episode begins with the final national anthem, that of the Faroe Islands because today is Ólavsøka. While I don’t speak Faroese, I see some similarity with other languages. So: How many other podcasters do YOU know who’ve mentioned Grimm’s Law? By the way, the title of this episode is in correct on my site, but the server doesn’t allow anything but basic characters in the MP3 filename. How rude!

The rest of this episode I update a few things, like a weather bomb that hit New Zealand this past weekend. Weather was bad, but we still did a few things. Comments let me expand on some of the things I said before, and add some new things.

I have a cold, but I tried to edit this so it makes more sense. Sometimes I succeeded.

I begin with a brief history update, then I tell you about an evening Nigel and I had recently. For the main topic today, I tell you about life in a place with a political and economic system that’s different from my homeland’s. New Zealand has a parliamentary democracy and it’s a social democracy. I know that some of my fellow Americans would hate the idea of either, but other country’s ways aren’t necessarily worse or wrong. There are some aspects to New Zealand that even the rightest-of-right Americans would approve of.

My next political discussion with Jason will be posted on Friday, August 1 (NZ time). If you have any questions or topics you’d like us to discuss, please send them to Arthur(at]amerinzpodcast.com in the next few days.

AmeriNZ 102 - Becoming Kiwi

Episode 102 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page.

I begin today by telling you about a couple items in the news, first, those missing Indians, then the NZ Census wants to identify the sexual orientation of New Zealanders.

The main topic today is about becoming Kiwi, essentially, being assimilated. I talk about my experience and my attitudes about it. I think that it helped me in unexpected ways.

Comments, a phone message and an email are next, which lets me talk a little more about the state of gay rights in New Zealand. Then I tell you about the schedule for Friday.

In today’s snack-sized episode, I tell you what it was like to go through the process of becoming a permanent resident, what it felt like and what I was thinking at the time. I also tell you a little bit about the pope in Australia and a NZ connection to it. Soon, maybe Friday, I’ll be talking about becoming a Kiwi.

100 episodes! I commemorate the day by not commemorating it: Today is just a normal episode.

So today I tell you about Australia banning t-shirts that may annoy Catholics (it’s nothing new). This sort of thing doesn’t really happen in New Zealand. Petrol may get a whole lot more expensive. Big surprise, I know. I then provide some gout advice. Then it’s on to phone messages and written comments. I even talk a bit about trying vegetarianism for one day.

AmeriNZ 98 - Presidential Sweepstakes

Jason joins me today as we resume our political discussions. The primaries are over, and the focus has shifted to the November elections. So today we kind of re-set the stage for what we’ll be talking about in future episodes.

We begin with a chat about campaign finance, then on to talk about vice presidential choices. Should the candidates have to condemn every single supporter who says something stupid? We talk about the recent Supreme Court gun ruling, and whether it will affect the election. Will the anti-gay ballot measures hurt Democrats this year, too?

Our next political chat will be in about three weeks, tentatively the last week of the month. In the meantime, please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.

AmeriNZ 96 – A few words

Today I try and use all seven of the words that George Carlin noted one cannot say on US television. It’s not as easy as you may think.

I go over a few items from New Zealand’s news. That lets me expand on a number of issues, including Australians’ obsession with sports people. Next, I talk a bit about the change in my podcast hosting. I then go over some emails, since the comments related to the change in podcast hosts.

AmeriNZ 95 - Changes abound

Today’s episode is all about changes, some major, some not.

I talk a bit today about the beginning of marriage equality in California and what that means. While it’s a very good day, the war is far form won.
But I begin this episode with an important announcement: It’s time to change the feed you subscribe to for this podcast. On June 19, I’ll be downgrading my Podomatic account to a free account and that could mean that access to my podcast through iTunes might be interrupted.

To avoid that, point your feedcatcher, including iTunes, to: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast

A phone message allows me to talk a bit about superstition in the US and New Zealand. Then, it’s on to other comments followed by another phone comment and written comments about episode 94: That episode was screwed up and it was because of, yep, Podomatic. Nevermind, that’ll be over soon.

AmeriNZ 94 - Auckland and stuff FIXED

This is a replacement episode. The original version was corrupted by Podomatic due to uploading errors on their servers. You can get all episodes from my new site, http://amerinzpodcast.com, where you can listen to or download any episode.

It's time to change your subscription to the new feed address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast

On today’s episode I tell you a bit about Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, and where I’ve lived for most of my years in New Zealand. There’s a lot to like about Auckland. But what are the two things I don’t like about it?

Then it’s on to a little discussion of gout, because I had an attack this week, the first in nearly two years. I tell you what it is, what causes it and what it’s like to endure an attack.

A catch-up with comments allows me to expand on some things I’ve talked about recently. I even tell you a bit about what I’ll be up to this weekend.

AmeriNZ 92 - Moving to New Zealand

Today’s episode is inspired by listener questions about moving to New Zealand and what the country’s like to live in. Today, I try to answer those questions.

In some ways, Episode 90 Kiwi Kustoms was part one of this topic because I talked about some of what it’s like to live in New Zealand. You also may want to listen to AmeriNZ 55 Being an expat (also inspired by listener questions).

I start with the question, why New Zealand? From there it’s a wide-ranging talk about healthcare, crime, politics and even the availability of products. I give some advice on how to prepare for moving here, and what you need to know.

For more information on immigration, go to the website of the New Zealand Immigration Service, immigration.govt.nz. They have a lot of information that will help you work out if you’re eligible to move here and more about New Zealand generally.

Then, an update on my podcast move, which is mostly done (all episodes are posted). The new site is http://amerinzpodcast.com, and the new feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast. You don’t need to change your iTunes subscriptions yet, but please start using the new site.

Leave a comment at the new site. Or, you can ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. Email at arthur{at)amerinz.com. You can also still use my other address, amerinz[at) yahoo.com.

We talk about Monique’s music, her career, and her debut album, “Awakening”. Monique uses many online avenues to promote her music, and we talk a bit about the opportunities the online world offers to independent musicians.

Monique lives in France most of the year, so we even talk a bit about being an expat. Naturally, we talk about New Zealand as well, along with some of what influenced Monique’s development as a singer/songwriter.

She was wonderful to visit with, and I thoroughly enjoyed our chat. I also really enjoy her music. You can buy it through her website, www.moniquerhodes.com, as well as through iTunes. I’ll have complete links in the shownotes on my blog.

This comes from a question from a listener who asked about the character and pace of daily life in NZ compared to the US. So I tell you about a few small things you probably wouldn’t read in a book or article, and put those things into a larger context.

This is all in a lead-up to my episode about moving to New Zealand, which I’ll be recording next week. If you have a question about that, or about New Zealand generally, send an email to me at arthur(at]amerinz.com by the weekend.

AmeriNZ 89 – One day

I begin today with a quick update on my laser eye surgery, one week later. That’s followed by a quick update about podcast meta stuff. Then, it’s on to a discussion of the US presidential race. Does Edwards’ endorsement of Obama matter to me? Do I think Hillary Clinton should drop out?

A phone comment lets me move on to talk a bit about New Zealand politics, which will become a common topic in the weeks ahead. Speaking of New Zealand, later this month I’ll be doing an episode about moving to New Zealand. Is there anything you want to know about that, or about New Zealand? Send me an email!

Comments allow me to expand my own comments. Then, to end the episode, I offer a “final thought for the week” called “One Day,” a podcast exclusive! It won’t be posted on my blog.

Comments then give me the chance to talk a bit more about my impending feed change, which is moving closer. I’m planning a special episode later this month—more details to follow.

AmeriNZ 87 – On a non-knife edge

I start today with some important updates on access to my podcast. There will be a new site and a new feed, but you don’t need to do anything yet. I’ll give you plenty of warning before change is needed.

Then I give you some updates on topics from earlier episodes.

I share a couple news items: Another Bush-Cheney official, an anti-gay ideologue, is facing criminal investigation. Also, an Australian survey has found that men in that country are changing—becoming “pansies” as one Aussie moron put it.

In honour of New Zealand Music Month, my outtro today is “Queen of a World” by NZ performer Monique Rhodes from the Podsafe Music Network on music.podshow.com. Complete links are on my shownotes.

AmeriNZ 86 – Arthur Returns

I’m finally back, and I start out telling you why this was so delayed. It’s actually a meander through my life recently. I’m going to be more relaxed about my podcasting schedule.

A listener email then lets me compare petrol prices in Australia, the US and New Zealand. Some of you don’t know how lucky you are. Then it’s on to comments, and especially some voice messages that piled up.

I’m planning on doing an episode soon specifically about moving to New Zealand. If there are things you’d like to know, or like others to know, just send me an email or ring the listener line.

AmeriNZ 85 - Caveman talk

Today I tell you about an iconic Kiwi company that’s decided to ditch New Zealand for Asia. Then, underwear boy may be heading for France. Did cavemen say, “G’day mate?” The ANZAC Day Public Holiday is a week from today, and I may not be posting an episode that day. So, I may only have one episode next week.

Slap Upside The Head just celebrated a birthday—congratulations! Then, I tell you the truth about iTunes reviews. I mention a few emails, then go on to comments.

AmeriNZ 84 – Tim too

This is part two of a two-part conversation with Tim Corrimal. You can find part one over at Tim’s site (http://timcorrimal.com/?p=103). In part two, we turn a little serious, talking about the circus that is the US presidential election. The media plays games, and often favourites. Perceptions affect a lot. People need to pay close attention to whoever McCain picks as his running mate.

There’s plenty of silliness, too, and we end the conversation talking about time differences, which leads us to Trek-out. A phone message and a few comments on my episodes follow. There’s even a WMBYS-style outtake at the very end.

AmeriNZ 83 - Normal Day

Today is a normal day, so I’m going to tell you about a few things in the New Zealand news. New Zealand has become the first developed country in the world to sign a free trade deal with China. That does that mean? A NZ professor has called for a tax on butter (it won’t happen). A new survey claims that about 20% of New Zealanders back nuclear energy—or do they? There’s also a New Zealand fact with a Google tip. Comments follow next, with more about the topics discussed in them.

The outtro today is “I Still Remember” by Bloc Party, from the Podsafe Music Network at music.podshow.com, or at http://music.podshow.com/music/listeners/artistdetails.php?BandHash=2f348ad33241b388753c74ed48324d96

Today is (our puppy) Jake’s first birthday! It’s a day for celebration, and I’m feeling a bit silly, I guess. I kid around a lot, and I deliver one joke totally seriously. Can you spot it? I start out today talking about Australia and New Zealand and the way people from one country don’t like to be confused with people from the other. I even give an expat tip. After that, it’s on to some items from the news that I think are funny. Did you hear about the world’s oldest recording? After that, it’s comments from two episodes.

It’s my first anniversary as a podcaster—my podoversary. As I begin my second year, I continue pretty much as I did in my first year. First, I share some of what’s been going on, before congratulatory messages allow me to comment further on my podcast and related topics. It’s an easy-going episode this week, and next week it’s back to normal. Thanks to everyone who’s listened to me over the past year—I appreciate everyone. This episode was run through Levelator because of all the phone messages, so if the sound is different, that’s why. Thank you all!

AmeriNZ 80 – Holiday Weekened

Four hours it took me to upload this episode…

A kamikaze phone message starts today’s episode. It’s the autumnal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere today, though we say Autumn began on March 1. We’re coming up on a four day holiday weekend, the Easter Weekend. Two days have total trading bans.

I tell you more than I usually do about what’s going on with us, then it’s on to a topic: Bad coffee. I have many comments to go over today, including another phone comment.

I give you a reason to support whoever the Democratic nominee is, and for defeating John McSame. Two words: Supreme Court. McSame would appoint more extremists to the Court and we’d all suffer from that.

AmeriNZ 79 – Another Friday

Tuesday was cloudy, today is rainy. I’m recording a short episode today—I realised that I have trouble keeping up with short episodes of other podcasts, so maybe I should try and keep my episodes short, too. We’re coming up on a four day weekend in New Zealand, and I have some extra time at the part-time job, so my podcasting schedule is adjusted. Beards are causing all sorts of trouble in Papakura, NZ. A gay Iranian refugee may or may not be deported to his execution by Britain. Stay tuned—WILL be following this.

Comments give me the chance to say I couldn’t care less who McCain chooses for VP because there’s no way I’ll vote for him/them. NZ is way better on prostitution than the US.

My one year anniversary of podcasting is the end of the month, so you still have time to send me a message. Ring my US listener line or email an MP3 to amerinz@podOmatic.com.

Comments give me the chance to say I couldn’t care less who McCain chooses for VP because there’s no way I’ll vote for him/them. NZ is way better on prostitution than the US.

AmeriNZ 78 – Cloudy Tuesday

It’s a cloudy Tuesday in Auckland, the perfect day for a chat. Today I’ll update you on some things that have been going on with me lately. Then, I talk about a few things in the news: The British are talking about kids pledging allegiance to the Queen, and I tell you what I think that’s about. Then, the Seven Deadly Sins, which Kiwis don’t believe in or, if they do, it’s Lust that gets ‘em. A report on fast food shows Kiwis eat a lot of flesh. Christian fanatics in my old area of Illinois are trying to get a book banned. Comments give me the chance to add my bit.

AmeriNZ 77 - Campaign continues

This has been a very big week in American politics: The Republican campaign ended, and the Democratic one didn’t. Today Holly from “We’re Mean Because You’re Stupid Podcast” joins me for a wide-ranging, and unashamedly biased, political discussion.

Who could be John McCain’s running mate? One name mentioned is the governor of Holly’s state. So, what’s he like? We’ve never heard of many of the other people being mentioned.

We don’t have much patience with Democrats who say it’s their candidate or nothing. We think it’s childish. Both Clinton and Obama are better than McCain. I think that Democrats have to be smarter in presenting their campaign and stop trying to argue a liberal or progressive position on conservative issues. We think the Dems have to avoid being “swift boated” again.

AmeriNZ 76 - Bits and Pieces

I didn’t mean to go a week between podcasts. I start out telling you why that was. Then, I talk about Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, along with Air New Zealand’s “Pink Flight” between San Francisco and Sydney. Some American gay men need to get over themselves.

A new lesbian MP was sworn into Parliament yesterday. I talk a bit about that, and a little more about New Zealand’s structure. I’ll talk more about that more after the US primaries are over.

There’s a little meta talk about running out of storage on Podomatic and what I might do about it. That pops again in the comments.

Do Kiwis have sex more often than Americans?

On today’s episode, we have big money in New Zealand. That’s up first. Then, a German backpacker got in trouble and had to clean up. Another backpacker cleaned-up financially. Apple’s iPhone maybe illegal in Australia. It was the NZ Prime Minister’s birthday yesterday. The NZ election draws near, and that means some political talk, both about NZ and the US. Comments round out this episode. And of course you’ll find shownotes and links over at my blog, amerinz.com.

AmeriNZ 74 – Short subjects

Today’s is a short episode, and that relates to my first topic: I’m running out of storage space on Podomatic, so I’ll soon take down my earliest episodes. If you ever wanted to listen to or download them, now’s the time! In about a week or so, I’ll be deleting my earliest episodes.

Okay, so I messed up some things on the answers to the questions on the last episode. Deal with it! Did you know that the light in New Zealand and Australia is different? Researchers say that it is and matters. Our petrol is bloody expensive compared to America. A conference was held in New Zealand to ban cluster bombs. The USA boycotted the meeting. Surprise! The United Kingdom may soon cut off residency access to some Commonwealth citizens. Comments including a voice letter round out this episode. Nigel will be back!

AmeriNZ 73 – Rambles

Today’s episode is a ramble through miscellany, inspired by a recent podcast from Tom, the Ramble Redhead, in which he answered questions he received in an email. You’ll probably know me a bit better after listening. I also steal an idea from another of Tom’s podcasts: Playing a bunch of clips from other podcasters talking about me (because, ya know, I can).

A little New Zealand news rounds out the episode, including some gay news. Then it’s comments to finish, along with an update to Episode 72.

Clips featured are from: Feast of Fools, We’re Mean Because You’re Stupid, Ongline Podcast, My Gay Two Cents, ArcherRadio, Big Fatty Online, Ramble Redhead.

AmeriNZ 72 – Reconciliation

I begin with a discussion of the Australian Prime Minister finally saying “sorry” to Aborigines. After a sound clip and some explanation, I include the special perspective of a guest commentator, an Australian who talks about how this was received, then about the topic of compensation and more. How does all this compare to New Zealand? From there it’s on to a talk about iTunes and a real surprise. That gives me a chance to tell you a bit more about where I’m coming from. Comments round out today’s episode.

From my perspective, this is what podcasts are all about—real people talking about what’s really happening, without the mainstream media filtering it. Let me know what you think.
