AmeriNZ 30 Second Promo
April 02, 2009 03:24 AM PDT
This is the current 30-second promo for my podcast. Since I’m no longer posting any new episodes to this feed, I wanted to have something to tell any listeners who find this site about my podcast and where they can now find it. To listen to any episode of the AmeriNZ Podcast, or to subscribe to the new feed, go to http://amerinzpodcast.com/.
March 27, 2009 04:09 AM PDT
Episode 150 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Two years! Today’s episode would have had an audio file, similar to episode one, but it couldn’t happen. I talk briefly about that subject before moving onto the breaking news I alluded to last time (and Jake makes an appearance in the background). From there, it’s on to anniversarium comments and more comments. I actually received some as I was working on this episode, so I finish it after a few wines—good move or not? You be the judge. In any event, the number of messages I received kinda changed the way I did this episode, but I don’t mind at all. Thank you for two years of wonderful times. I deeply appreciate it! This is the final episode I’ll post to this feed. It’s time to change to the new feed! Go to http://amerinzpodcast.com/ to subscribe. Things I forgot!

Episode 149 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. It’s Thursday, so that makes this my penultimate episode, since tomorrow is my over-hyped Second Anniversary/150th episode. I begin today with some more updates, starting with a pretty big one. Did you know there was a reason I picked all the small topics this week? I get caught up on comments, too, which lets me expand on earlier topics. The final episode posted to this feed will be tomorrow. It’s time to change to the new feed! Go to http://amerinzpodcast.com/ to subscribe. Mentioned today:

Episode 3 begins our regular schedule of podcasting every other week (more or less…). After special news, a special announcement: 2Political has it’s own US-based comment line—206-426-0527. Then it’s on to AIG and the implications of that whole situation. We say that reform, regulation and oversight will all be necessary. We then move on to talking about the plans to buy “toxic assets” and what that can mean. Back in a couple weeks—but not here: This is the last 2Political Podcast episode that will be posted to Podomatic. From now on, you'll have to subscribe directly or get it through AmeriNZ Podcast at amerinzpodcast.com Please go to http://2political.com to leave a comment, or you can send an email to arthur[at)2political.com or jason{at]2political.com, or you can ring the US-based 2Political Comment line on 206-426-0527. Today I start with updates on things I’ve talked about in previous episodes—including just yesterday. Cheese-in-a-can comes up again, as it were, which leads into a larger discussion of food. Yep, the AmeriNZ Podcast, where you’ll hear about the things no one else will tell you. Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a 2Political episode, and I plan to be back on Thursday with another AmeriNZ Podcast, followed by my Second Anniversary on Friday. The final episode posted to this feed will be on Friday. It’s time to change to the new feed! Go to http://amerinzpodcast.com/ to subscribe. The AmeriNZ Podcast will be two years old at the end of the week, and to celebrate I’m planning to podcast every day this week (though Wednesday will be a 2Political episode). I talk today about some of the realities of living at “the end of the world” (from a US or European perspective). I also share what may be a sign of the other meaning of the phrase—the end of everything. The final episode posted to this feed will be on Friday. It’s time to change to the new feed! Go to http://amerinzpodcast.com/ to subscribe. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US comment line on 206-666-5172.

The second episode of 2Political! After special news, a phone message lets us talk a bit more about earmarks. When did they become so bad? Are the Republicans right? Or can earmarks be good? We have even more comments to discuss. If you have something you’d like to see us discuss, or you have a question, feel free to leave a comment, send us an email or ring the AmeriNZ comment line (there’ll be a separate one eventually!) on 206-666-5172. The next episode of 2Political will be in 2 weeks. Feel free to visit our new website: 2political.com. You can also send an email to arthur[at) 2political.com or jason{at] 2political.com. 2 Political episodes will continue to be available through AmeriNZ Podcast for quite awhile, but iTunes subscription will be available soon. In the meantime, if you want to subscribe directly now, you can use http://feeds2.feedburner.com/2politicalPodcast. Link for this episode:

Episode 145 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. I begin today with a few a couple news items, including one about an American woman who was denied residence in New Zealand because she's obese. For my main topic, I talk about some "home truths", some truth and facts about New Zealand. This was inspired by some downright bizarre things I saw on some online forums. I talk about NZ houses, pay and taxes, public transport, crime and even prejudice. Whew! Feel free to ask about anything you'd like to know about. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US comment line on 206-666-5172.

This is the first of the stand-alone versions of what Jason and I used to call our “Politicasts”. You’ll be able to subscribe to this podcast separately if you want, but for the time being I’ll be posting it so subscribers to the AmeriNZ Podcast will get it automatically. We begin today by talking about “Boss” Rush Limbaugh, and the disarray among Republicans. To move on from that sorry tale, Jason has two factoids. Back to the serious, Arthur brings up the revelations about the Bush memos that gave Bush legal cover for seizing dictatorial power, some of which he did. We had no idea until recently how bad it really was, and how bad it almost was. Should members of the Bush/Cheney regime be prosecuted? Then, some more Congress talk. What about giving Washington, DC real representation in the US House of Representatives (thanks for the topic, Kandi!)? Feel free to visit our new website: 2political.com . You can also send an email to arthur[at) 2political.com or jason{at] 2political.com. 2 Political episodes will continue to be available through AmeriNZ Podcast for quite awhile. iTunes subscription will be available soon. In the meantime, if you want to subscribe directly now, you can use http://feeds2.feedburner.com/2politicalPodcast. Link for this episode:

You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. I begin today with a few notes and updates, especially about the Australian bush fires. Then, a gay NZ politician is moving onto the world stage. The former Prime Minister may, too. The “politicasts” are becoming a separate podcast called “2 Political” (but I’ll still post them to AmeriNZ for awhile, anyway). The posts to Podomatic will end on March 27. Yesterday was the final day of the “Internet Blackout” campaign, and I tell you what that was all about and the development that cancelled yesterday’s podcast. I’ll be posting my two-year anniversary episode on Friday, March 27. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US comment line on 206-666-5172.

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. We’re finally back with our first Politicast since January. First up today, we announce the name for the new stand-alone political podcast we’re doing. Then it’s on to the economic stimulus, which President Obama signed into law today. We talk about some of the implications, and Jason also presents his ideas for helping ordinary homeowners. That leads to a talk of banks and the financial markets. Despite it all, we end on a positive note. Link for this episode:

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. It’s been a bit unusual lately, especially the tropical weather in Auckland. But the big news here has been the Australian bush fires. I tell you a bit about that, especially New Zealand’s response. A voicemail lets me talk about schools in New Zealand and also whether it’s easier for GLBT people here than in the US. It’s a multi-faceted episode today! Link for this episode:

I met today’s guest, Peter (aka epilonious) of the They Don’t Know podcast through blog/podcast comments and have gotten to know him since then. Our interactions have sometimes been, um, intense, but for him it’s been even more so with others. So I asked him why he does it, given those reactions. This leads to a wider discussion of blogs/forums and commenting generally, and how things can go wrong. Links for this episode:

You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Jason and I are back with our first political chat of the year. I tried to improve the sound a bit this episode, with mixed results (I think Jason sounds better and I sound worse, and the file size was much too big). At any rate, I’m working to improve things. In addition to the upcoming inauguration and the departure of Bush (finally!!!), we also share some news about what we’re up to. I’ll keep working on the sound, and I think the next political chat will be better still. The next one will be in early February. I give you a couple quick updates about the podcast—especially my new comment line (206-666-5172), since I lost the old one from non-use. For my third video, I thought I’d just show a few things from Auckland around Christmastime. This isn’t everything, obviously, but a few things that stand out for me. In the New Year, there will be more videos where I show you more of my Auckland. Merry Christmas! It’s been a pleasure and an honour sharing some of this year with you. The next couple weeks I’m spending with Nigel, and I’ll be back in the New Year. All the best to you! You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. This is our final politicast of the year, but we’ll be back sometime in the first couple weeks of January—and with some announcements and new things. Today we talk about a lot of things, starting with the mess in our old home state of Illinois. We also have an extensive discussion about religion and politics, same-sex marriage, and we even talk about the divisive online rhetoric of the left and—especially—the right. I say that far right christianists are not”victims”, and it’s offensive for them to say they are. Jason is annoyed by far-right christianists falsely claiming to speak for all “people of faith”. Later, we talk about the bailouts and the twilight of the Bush years. Are Bush-Cheney guilty of treason? We end by talking about the optimism of the impending inauguration. Comments let us discuss a few more things, too. Link for this episode: Be sure to visit Jason’s Blog. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today I’m joined by my e-friend, Mark from Slap Upside the Head, to talk about the current constitutional crisis in Canada. Some people have called it a coup d'état, but who’s fomenting the coup kind of depends on which side you’re on. Mark provides a lot of background to the current events, and I compare and contrast some things with both New Zealand and the US. It’s a wide-ranging discussion, and I know I learned some things about Canadian politics. We’re going to try and meet up again in the New Year to talk about how the situation is resolved—assuming it is! Link for this episode: The delicate role of the Governor General. Seriously, I’ve been very busy for the past couple weeks or so, and today was the first chance I’ve had to record. Maybe I should’ve waited a little longer (I was a bit silly—well, for me, anyway). So first I give some updates, including about our Thanksgiving. I also talk a bit about our plans for Christmas. I even tell you about Canadian politics! Well, you just never know what will turn up on the AmeriNZ Podcast! We begin today talking about the Canadian elections last month. What happened, and what does it mean? What's a "minority government", and how does Canada end up with one? We talk a bit how parliamentary democracies work, and how that relates to a minority government in Canada. How did the GLBT communities fare? How did Canada end up with higher age of consent for GLBT people? We also talk about standing up to homophobia and even about allowing comments on websites. Then, we discuss a few smaller issues, and go over comments. Then it’s to the main purpose of today’s podcast: Our “closing statements”. We tell you what we’re thinking and feeling at the end of this long campaign.

AmeriNZ 125p - Politicast for the Last Weekend
October 31, 2008 09:42 PM PDT
Episode 125 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. We’re heading into the final weekend of the 2008 Election Campaign, so we start off talking about recent events, including Barack’s 30-minute broadcast, early voting, voting machines, vote fraud and we even have an election night tip. We eventually move on to talking about various ballot initiatives, and when we get to talking about Proposition 8 in California, I really get on my soapbox. Should there be some sort of penalty for those who use lies in a political campaign, like those trying to end same-sex marriage in California have done? I don’t think that ads using lies should be allowed, but Jason is more dubious. Later, after comments, we start talking about the notion that politicians are never allowed to admit mistakes, so they have to stick with bad ideas no matter what. All of which are the sorts of things we’ll be talking about once this election is finally over. Next political chat will be on Election Eve. Links for this episode:

AmeriNZ 124p - Politicast – The Final Week
October 29, 2008 01:45 AM PDT
Episode 124 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. It’s the final week of the US election campaign—FINALLY! We added a podcast today, one Friday and one next week on “election eve”. Then we’ll collapse (hopefully from exhaustion caused by celebrating). So we start in with me talking about the alternate universe that Fox Noise operates in, and that leads into a discussion of varying looks at the Electoral College map. One major indication of how things are going is where the candidates are campaigning, and the Republicans are spending most of their time in states that should have been safe for them, but they’re not. We also look at the possibility of voter fraud and vote suppression to keep Obama from winning. Which candidate can bring reconciliation to the country? The new Congress will have a lot more Democrats, but the ideology won’t change much; we tell you why. A phone message lets us talk about third parties and a major reform that would let them run a campaign that could possibly win the White House. Other comments let us talk about Amendment 2 in Florida, Prop 8 in California and even a bit about Illinois politics. Next political chat will be at the end of this week. Links for this episode:

AmeriNZ 123p - Politicast last 2 weeks
October 24, 2008 03:22 AM PDT
Episode 123 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. We’re in the last two weeks, and soon this way-too-long campaign will be over! We start today with polls: Where they’re at, what they mean. We also talk about early voting and its impact on the election. Then we move on to a hard look at the rhetoric of the Republican campaign. What does “pro-American” mean? Why has Palin promoted her strong support for a Constitutional Amendment to ban same-sex marriage? Log Cabin Republicans get a verbal slap. Oh, yeah, we have to talk about right wing Christianity, too, given the role it’s playing in this campaign. Comments let us talk even more! Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/ (where you’ll also find links for this episode), send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 122p - NZ Updates
October 22, 2008 03:04 AM PDT
Episode 122 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today’s episode is mainly updates, especially about the New Zealand election. But this episode starts with some totally unrelated things, including one thing that even had me a little depressed. I then have a couple other updates followed by comments. One of my favourite podcasters leaves a phone message! The next Politicast with Jason will be up on Friday. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/ (where you’ll also find links for this episode), send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 121p - Fun in New Zealand
October 19, 2008 10:37 PM PDT
Episode 121 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. A listener voicemail leads me to talk about some of the things that people in New Zealand do for fun. Mostly, it’s similar to what people in other Western countries do. I have some written comments and other voicemails today, too. And Big Fatty makes a guest appearance. I have two more episodes planned for this week, including another Polticast with Jason at the end of the week. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/ (where you’ll also find links for this episode), send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 120p - Politicast - After the debates
October 17, 2008 04:33 AM PDT
Episode 120 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Jason and I are back, after the final (!) presidential debate. We talk about that, and also about the two “elephants in the room”: Palin’s religion and Obama’s race. The first ought to be an issue, especially for GLBT voters—and rational voters of all kinds—and the other isn’t a factor for opinion polls (we tell you why). Aside from that, it’s a wide-ranging discussion of the US election, with more to come. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/ (where you’ll also find links for this episode), send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 119p - The Issue of Healthcare
October 14, 2008 09:24 PM PDT
Episode 119 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Most people agree, and most Americans want a single-payer, universal system. So why does the rightwing always say these systems don’t work? Do they? New Zealand’s system works well, as does the system in Canada and the UK. It’s not perfect anywhere, but no one has to choose between healthcare and basic survival. The rightwing doesn’t know what it’s talking about. Two more episodes this week. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.

You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. It’s back to work today, with our guests gone and the holiday over. So I start today by talking a bit about our week. After that, I update a couple things, and comments let me add some more. Now it’s back to normal podcasting (by the way, I DO know it’s October now, despite the date I said at the beginning; I was still in holiday mode when I recorded, I guess). September 15, 2008 05:07 PM PDT
Although this is my second video, it's my first official video podcast. However, it won't be posted to Podomatic because the site downsamples video too much. If you want to see it, go to amerinzpodcast.com. Today I talk about voting overseas. US citizens living permanently overseas use the FPCA (Federal Postcard Application) program to register to vote and obtain their ballot. To start the process, go to www.VoteFromAbroad.org. Voter registration deadlines in all states are approaching fast, so hurry! This video podcast let's me share something unusual toward the end. Please leave a comment, email me at Arthur{at}amerinzpodcast.com or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413.
AmeriNZ 113 - Politicast after the RNC
September 09, 2008 08:57 PM PDT
Episode 113 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today we wrap-up the Republican Convention, including speeches and our general impressions. The crowd looked very homogenous to us. I mention the extreme police over-reaction: Does that relate to the Republicans’ constant attacks on the media? The two parties’ platforms don’t make any difference except that they tell us about party activists, the people who drive the parties. The Republican activists are way to the right. What, if anything, does either party offer average, undecided voters? Jason offers his thoughts on that, and how the extremes are screaming at each other while the folks in the middle are being ignored. Then we talk a bit about opinion polls as we start the discussion of the general election. I’m more worried about voter suppression than Jason is. Comments let us comment, too. (The odd voice in the background during the last couple minutes is the plumber talking on his cellphone). Be sure to visit Jason’s blog. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, where there are also links for this episode. Send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.

AmeriNZ 111p – Between Conventions
September 02, 2008 06:13 AM PDT
Episode 111 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Jason and I are back to wrap up the Democratic National Convention ad look ahead to the Republican National Convention. What did we think about the speeches at the Democratic Convention? What were the highlights? The lobbyist loopholes must be closed. John McCain’s choice for Vice President: What can we say? We have some breaking news. We think McCain’s choice is truly awful—there’s no stronger way of putting that. Sarah Palin is a tool—I can’t stand her. Given McCain’s indebtedness to the oil and gas industry, who else would he have picked? We have heaps of comments to close out the episode. We’ll be back with another political chat in a week. Be sure to visit Jason’s blog! Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
Podomatic AmeriNZ 110 - Poltical Chat - Conventions Begin
August 26, 2008 01:10 AM PDT
Episode 110 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. The Democratic National Convention began today, so Jason and I are back to chat about politics. We begin by discussing the two main US parties, inspired by a listener question, and talk about how they evolved into the parties they are today—their differences then and now. This sets the stage for discussions about the party conventions (this also gave me a chance to sneak in a little story from my past). We look at the purpose of the conventions. Is the Republican McCain’s campaign doing anything unusual to target the Democrats during their convention? What do we think about Joe Biden? I actually met him once (did you hear who Jason and I met years ago?). We have a phone comment about our last political chat to end today’s episode with. We’ll be back next week, when we’ll go over comments to this episode. I’ll be posting a regular solo episode at the end of this week. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ Video 01 – My New Zealand
August 23, 2008 08:52 PM PDT
This is my first video, though technically it’s just a kind of slide show. But I wanted to share some of the special places I’ve been in New Zealand, and this seemed like a good way to start doing videos. In future videos I’ll show you more of my New Zealand. Please leave a comment, email me at Arthur{at}amerinzpodcast.com or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413.
AmeriNZ 109 - Marriage Equality
August 22, 2008 03:41 AM PDT
Episode 109 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today is all about marriage equality. I start out sharing my thoughts on the topic of marriage equality, then I move on to take on a religious wingnut and his loopy arguments. You may find something useful in all this to combat the bigots you encounter. But I do get a bit stroppy in my rhetoric, so be warned. A comment on another topic lets me tell you something about a tech development in New Zealand. If you have a strong stomach and want to see the relevant link, see the comments to episode 106 on the main site. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 108 - Media Empire
August 19, 2008 11:26 PM PDT
Episode 108 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today’s episode is mainly about the feedback from Episode 107 (thank you everyone!). First us, though, I give you some personal updates. I got a lot of really good feedback on how to proceed with my blog, podcast and upcoming videos. That also allows me to share some other things. Finally today, I have something about New Zealand to share. The next episode will be about marriage equality, and the next political podcast will probably be on Tuesday, 26 Aug rather than Friday 29 Aug. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 107 - Directing content
August 14, 2008 11:00 PM PDT
Episode 107 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. First up today I talk about some of the additional things I want to do, beyond the podcast and blog, and I ask for your feedback. Not everyone wants the same sort of content, so this is your chance to speak up. Also, the Friday episode is moving to Thurday (NZ time), for now, at least. Comments let me expand on a few topics. Birthday greetings to Wes Stone and Big Fatty. Also, a special hello to listener Alvaro. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmerINZ 106 – The Tyranny of Distance
August 12, 2008 03:50 AM PDT
Episode 106 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today I talk a bit about a car accident that my sister was recently in. It's a good reminder that people who live a far way from home—or overseas—have to be prepared for this kind of thing. Although many don't think about it, they should. I'm now planning on talking about comments from only the past two weeks. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 105 - Monthly Politics
July 31, 2008 11:13 PM PDT
Episode 105 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. It’s time again for a political podcast with Jason, but this one starts out with a special announcement. From there, it’s on to talk of Obama’s recent tour and McCain’s reaction to it, Condoleeza Rice in New Zealand and the Pacific, and then on to the vice presidential sweepstakes. We also talk about the scandals at the US Justice Department, and another story in the news that has nothing to do with politics. Be sure to visit Jason’s blog! The next political podcast with Jason is tentatively scheduled for posting on Friday, August 29 New Zealand time. Special thanks to Ryan of The Way We See It podcast for the voicemail that opens today’s episode. I'll go over all comments next time (this episode was running a bit long). Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 104 - Góða Ólavsøku
July 29, 2008 12:55 AM PDT
Episode 104 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. Today’s snack-sized episode begins with the final national anthem, that of the Faroe Islands because today is Ólavsøka. While I don’t speak Faroese, I see some similarity with other languages. So: How many other podcasters do YOU know who’ve mentioned Grimm’s Law? By the way, the title of this episode is in correct on my site, but the server doesn’t allow anything but basic characters in the MP3 filename. How rude! The rest of this episode I update a few things, like a weather bomb that hit New Zealand this past weekend. Weather was bad, but we still did a few things. Comments let me expand on some of the things I said before, and add some new things. Be back on Friday with another political podcast with Jason. There’ll be a special announcement, too. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 103 - Different ways
July 24, 2008 05:15 PM PDT
Episode 103 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. I have a cold, but I tried to edit this so it makes more sense. Sometimes I succeeded. I begin with a brief history update, then I tell you about an evening Nigel and I had recently. For the main topic today, I tell you about life in a place with a political and economic system that’s different from my homeland’s. New Zealand has a parliamentary democracy and it’s a social democracy. I know that some of my fellow Americans would hate the idea of either, but other country’s ways aren’t necessarily worse or wrong. There are some aspects to New Zealand that even the rightest-of-right Americans would approve of. My next political discussion with Jason will be posted on Friday, August 1 (NZ time). If you have any questions or topics you’d like us to discuss, please send them to Arthur(at]amerinzpodcast.com in the next few days. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 102 - Becoming Kiwi
July 22, 2008 01:12 AM PDT
Episode 102 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. I begin today by telling you about a couple items in the news, first, those missing Indians, then the NZ Census wants to identify the sexual orientation of New Zealanders. The main topic today is about becoming Kiwi, essentially, being assimilated. I talk about my experience and my attitudes about it. I think that it helped me in unexpected ways. Comments, a phone message and an email are next, which lets me talk a little more about the state of gay rights in New Zealand. Then I tell you about the schedule for Friday. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 101 - Getting to stay
July 15, 2008 12:48 AM PDT
Episode 101 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. In today’s snack-sized episode, I tell you what it was like to go through the process of becoming a permanent resident, what it felt like and what I was thinking at the time. I also tell you a little bit about the pope in Australia and a NZ connection to it. Soon, maybe Friday, I’ll be talking about becoming a Kiwi. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 100 – 100 not out
July 11, 2008 04:02 AM PDT
Episode 100 is now available, and it's free no matter where you get it from. You can listen to it or download it through the player at the bottom of the post here, or subscribe for free through iTunes here (you must have the free iTunes player installed). You can also listen to it for free through the player on my MySpace page. 100 episodes! I commemorate the day by not commemorating it: Today is just a normal episode. So today I tell you about Australia banning t-shirts that may annoy Catholics (it’s nothing new). This sort of thing doesn’t really happen in New Zealand. Petrol may get a whole lot more expensive. Big surprise, I know. I then provide some gout advice. Then it’s on to phone messages and written comments. I even talk a bit about trying vegetarianism for one day. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 99 - Just Me
July 08, 2008 12:37 AM PDT
Today’s episode is just me: I tell you about something I got in the mail, something about the new home of my podcast (amerinzpodcast.com), then it’s on to the comments I haven’t had time for lately. Today’s episode starts with another country’s national anthem; what country is it? This will be my feature for July. And speaking of July features, today I also continue a shorter episode on Tuesday. Please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 98 - Presidential Sweepstakes
July 03, 2008 05:34 PM PDT
Jason joins me today as we resume our political discussions. The primaries are over, and the focus has shifted to the November elections. So today we kind of re-set the stage for what we’ll be talking about in future episodes. We begin with a chat about campaign finance, then on to talk about vice presidential choices. Should the candidates have to condemn every single supporter who says something stupid? We talk about the recent Supreme Court gun ruling, and whether it will affect the election. Will the anti-gay ballot measures hurt Democrats this year, too? Our next political chat will be in about three weeks, tentatively the last week of the month. In the meantime, please leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, send an email to arthur{at]amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413.
AmeriNZ 97 - We're Number One
June 30, 2008 10:37 PM PDT
July 1 is Canada Day, the country’s birthday, so first I salute my fellow Commonwealth Citizens. Then, I tell you how New Zealand is number one in something unusual. The NZ political party that’s currently polling in first place was revealed to be using a shady PR agency. And I also tell you how the AmeriNZ Podcast was Number One. Leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at] amerinzpodcast.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com).
AmeriNZ 96 – A few words
June 24, 2008 03:04 AM PDT
Today I try and use all seven of the words that George Carlin noted one cannot say on US television. It’s not as easy as you may think. I go over a few items from New Zealand’s news. That lets me expand on a number of issues, including Australians’ obsession with sports people. Next, I talk a bit about the change in my podcast hosting. I then go over some emails, since the comments related to the change in podcast hosts. Leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at] amerinzpodcast.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). Permalink for this episode: http://amerinzpodcast.com/?p=114 AmeriNZ Podcast new home

This is just a short confirmation notice that I’ve now downgraded my Podomatic account to a free account. I’ll soon have a new iTunes subscriber address, but until then you may want to re-subscribe to: http://feeds.feedburner.com/amerinzpodcast. All episodes are available from the new home of the AmeriNZ Podcast, http://amerinzpodcast.com. AmeriNZ 95 - Changes abound
June 17, 2008 01:33 AM PDT
Today’s episode is all about changes, some major, some not. I talk a bit today about the beginning of marriage equality in California and what that means. While it’s a very good day, the war is far form won.
To avoid that, point your feedcatcher, including iTunes, to: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast A phone message allows me to talk a bit about superstition in the US and New Zealand. Then, it’s on to other comments followed by another phone comment and written comments about episode 94: That episode was screwed up and it was because of, yep, Podomatic. Nevermind, that’ll be over soon. Leave a comment at http://amerinzpodcast.com/, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 94 - Auckland and stuff FIXED
June 12, 2008 11:08 PM PDT
This is a replacement episode. The original version was corrupted by Podomatic due to uploading errors on their servers. You can get all episodes from my new site, http://amerinzpodcast.com, where you can listen to or download any episode. It's time to change your subscription to the new feed address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AmerinzPodcast
AmeriNZ 93 - More moving to NZ and expats
June 09, 2008 10:46 PM PDT
Today I tell you a bit more about moveing to New Zealand, including some things I didn’t mention in Epsiode 92. Then, I talk a bit about being an expat, inspired by a recent article, and I finish up with some bits and pieces about the podcast and some things that happened recently. Leave a comment at amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 92 - Moving to New Zealand
May 27, 2008 11:27 PM PDT
Today’s episode is inspired by listener questions about moving to New Zealand and what the country’s like to live in. Today, I try to answer those questions.
AmeriNZ 91 - Monique Rhodes
May 23, 2008 05:19 AM PDT
Today’s special guest is New Zealand singer/songwriter, Monique Rhodes. We talk about Monique’s music, her career, and her debut album, “Awakening”. Monique uses many online avenues to promote her music, and we talk a bit about the opportunities the online world offers to independent musicians. Monique lives in France most of the year, so we even talk a bit about being an expat. Naturally, we talk about New Zealand as well, along with some of what influenced Monique’s development as a singer/songwriter. She was wonderful to visit with, and I thoroughly enjoyed our chat. I also really enjoy her music. You can buy it through her website, www.moniquerhodes.com, as well as through iTunes. I’ll have complete links in the shownotes on my blog. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinzpodcast.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 90 - Kiwi Kustoms
May 20, 2008 01:14 AM PDT
Today I tell you some of what it’s like living in New Zealand. This comes from a question from a listener who asked about the character and pace of daily life in NZ compared to the US. So I tell you about a few small things you probably wouldn’t read in a book or article, and put those things into a larger context. This is all in a lead-up to my episode about moving to New Zealand, which I’ll be recording next week. If you have a question about that, or about New Zealand generally, send an email to me at arthur(at]amerinz.com by the weekend. I also have an update on the changes to my podcast hosting, including the new website/blog for the shownotes, though it’s too early to make any changes, like to bookmarks, etc. After comments, I tell you about Episode 91, which will be a special episode. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 89 – One day
May 16, 2008 02:28 AM PDT
I begin today with a quick update on my laser eye surgery, one week later. That’s followed by a quick update about podcast meta stuff. Then, it’s on to a discussion of the US presidential race. Does Edwards’ endorsement of Obama matter to me? Do I think Hillary Clinton should drop out? A phone comment lets me move on to talk a bit about New Zealand politics, which will become a common topic in the weeks ahead. Speaking of New Zealand, later this month I’ll be doing an episode about moving to New Zealand. Is there anything you want to know about that, or about New Zealand? Send me an email! Comments allow me to expand my own comments. Then, to end the episode, I offer a “final thought for the week” called “One Day,” a podcast exclusive! It won’t be posted on my blog. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 88 - Seeing again for the first time
May 13, 2008 01:15 AM PDT
It’s now five days since I had my LASIK eye surgery, and today I tell you about that and why it was such a big deal for me. The whole thing wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting, and it all turned out well. I tell you about the day, the immediate aftermath and what the situation is so far. Comments then give me the chance to talk a bit more about my impending feed change, which is moving closer. I’m planning a special episode later this month—more details to follow. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 87 – On a non-knife edge
May 06, 2008 05:24 PM PDT
I start today with some important updates on access to my podcast. There will be a new site and a new feed, but you don’t need to do anything yet. I’ll give you plenty of warning before change is needed. Then I give you some updates on topics from earlier episodes. I share a couple news items: Another Bush-Cheney official, an anti-gay ideologue, is facing criminal investigation. Also, an Australian survey has found that men in that country are changing—becoming “pansies” as one Aussie moron put it. In honour of New Zealand Music Month, my outtro today is “Queen of a World” by NZ performer Monique Rhodes from the Podsafe Music Network on music.podshow.com. Complete links are on my shownotes. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 86 – Arthur Returns
May 01, 2008 02:36 PM PDT
I’m finally back, and I start out telling you why this was so delayed. It’s actually a meander through my life recently. I’m going to be more relaxed about my podcasting schedule. A listener email then lets me compare petrol prices in Australia, the US and New Zealand. Some of you don’t know how lucky you are. Then it’s on to comments, and especially some voice messages that piled up. I’m planning on doing an episode soon specifically about moving to New Zealand. If there are things you’d like to know, or like others to know, just send me an email or ring the listener line. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 85 - Caveman talk
April 18, 2008 03:47 AM PDT
Today I tell you about an iconic Kiwi company that’s decided to ditch New Zealand for Asia. Then, underwear boy may be heading for France. Did cavemen say, “G’day mate?” The ANZAC Day Public Holiday is a week from today, and I may not be posting an episode that day. So, I may only have one episode next week. Slap Upside The Head just celebrated a birthday—congratulations! Then, I tell you the truth about iTunes reviews. I mention a few emails, then go on to comments. My outtro today is “Bearing Witness” by Kiwi performer Monique Rhodes from the Podsafe Music Network on music.podshow.com. Complete links are on my shownotes. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 84 – Tim too
April 14, 2008 10:16 PM PDT
This is part two of a two-part conversation with Tim Corrimal. You can find part one over at Tim’s site (http://timcorrimal.com/?p=103). In part two, we turn a little serious, talking about the circus that is the US presidential election. The media plays games, and often favourites. Perceptions affect a lot. People need to pay close attention to whoever McCain picks as his running mate. There’s plenty of silliness, too, and we end the conversation talking about time differences, which leads us to Trek-out. A phone message and a few comments on my episodes follow. There’s even a WMBYS-style outtake at the very end. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at Arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 83 - Normal Day
April 08, 2008 03:05 AM PDT
Today is a normal day, so I’m going to tell you about a few things in the New Zealand news. New Zealand has become the first developed country in the world to sign a free trade deal with China. That does that mean? A NZ professor has called for a tax on butter (it won’t happen). A new survey claims that about 20% of New Zealanders back nuclear energy—or do they? There’s also a New Zealand fact with a Google tip. Comments follow next, with more about the topics discussed in them. The outtro today is “I Still Remember” by Bloc Party, from the Podsafe Music Network at music.podshow.com, or at http://music.podshow.com/music/listeners/artistdetails.php?BandHash=2f348ad33241b388753c74ed48324d96 Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at Arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 82 – Jake Day
April 04, 2008 02:32 AM PDT
Today is (our puppy) Jake’s first birthday! It’s a day for celebration, and I’m feeling a bit silly, I guess. I kid around a lot, and I deliver one joke totally seriously. Can you spot it? I start out today talking about Australia and New Zealand and the way people from one country don’t like to be confused with people from the other. I even give an expat tip. After that, it’s on to some items from the news that I think are funny. Did you hear about the world’s oldest recording? After that, it’s comments from two episodes. Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US listener line on (206) 339-8413. You can also email me at Arthur{at]amerinz.com (or the old address at amerinz(at]yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 81 – First Podoversary
March 28, 2008 03:21 AM PDT
It’s my first anniversary as a podcaster—my podoversary. As I begin my second year, I continue pretty much as I did in my first year. First, I share some of what’s been going on, before congratulatory messages allow me to comment further on my podcast and related topics. It’s an easy-going episode this week, and next week it’s back to normal. Thanks to everyone who’s listened to me over the past year—I appreciate everyone. This episode was run through Levelator because of all the phone messages, so if the sound is different, that’s why. Thank you all! AmeriNZ 80 – Holiday Weekened
March 20, 2008 02:38 AM PDT
Four hours it took me to upload this episode… A kamikaze phone message starts today’s episode. It’s the autumnal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere today, though we say Autumn began on March 1. We’re coming up on a four day holiday weekend, the Easter Weekend. Two days have total trading bans. I tell you more than I usually do about what’s going on with us, then it’s on to a topic: Bad coffee. I have many comments to go over today, including another phone comment. I give you a reason to support whoever the Democratic nominee is, and for defeating John McSame. Two words: Supreme Court. McSame would appoint more extremists to the Court and we’d all suffer from that. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. You can email email me (won’t be read on the podcast) at arthur{at)amerinz.com (you can also still use my other address, amerinz[at) yahoo.com). AmeriNZ 79 – Another Friday
March 14, 2008 03:21 AM PDT
Tuesday was cloudy, today is rainy. I’m recording a short episode today—I realised that I have trouble keeping up with short episodes of other podcasts, so maybe I should try and keep my episodes short, too. We’re coming up on a four day weekend in New Zealand, and I have some extra time at the part-time job, so my podcasting schedule is adjusted. Beards are causing all sorts of trouble in Papakura, NZ. A gay Iranian refugee may or may not be deported to his execution by Britain. Stay tuned—WILL be following this. Comments give me the chance to say I couldn’t care less who McCain chooses for VP because there’s no way I’ll vote for him/them. NZ is way better on prostitution than the US. My one year anniversary of podcasting is the end of the month, so you still have time to send me a message. Ring my US listener line or email an MP3 to amerinz@podOmatic.com. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email a comment to comment(at]amerinz.com, or send a personal email to me (won’t be read on the podcast) to arthur{at)amerinz.com. You can also still use my other address, amerinz[at) yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 78 – Cloudy Tuesday
March 10, 2008 09:24 PM PDT
It’s a cloudy Tuesday in Auckland, the perfect day for a chat. Today I’ll update you on some things that have been going on with me lately. Then, I talk about a few things in the news: The British are talking about kids pledging allegiance to the Queen, and I tell you what I think that’s about. Then, the Seven Deadly Sins, which Kiwis don’t believe in or, if they do, it’s Lust that gets ‘em. A report on fast food shows Kiwis eat a lot of flesh. Christian fanatics in my old area of Illinois are trying to get a book banned. Comments give me the chance to add my bit. March 06, 2008 09:57 PM PST
This has been a very big week in American politics: The Republican campaign ended, and the Democratic one didn’t. Today Holly from “We’re Mean Because You’re Stupid Podcast” joins me for a wide-ranging, and unashamedly biased, political discussion. Who could be John McCain’s running mate? One name mentioned is the governor of Holly’s state. So, what’s he like? We’ve never heard of many of the other people being mentioned. We don’t have much patience with Democrats who say it’s their candidate or nothing. We think it’s childish. Both Clinton and Obama are better than McCain. I think that Democrats have to be smarter in presenting their campaign and stop trying to argue a liberal or progressive position on conservative issues. We think the Dems have to avoid being “swift boated” again. Catch Holly's podcast at: http://weremeanbecauseyourestupid.blogspot.com/ My one year anniversary of podcasting is the end of the month, so you still have time to send me a message. March 04, 2008 06:16 PM PST
I didn’t mean to go a week between podcasts. I start out telling you why that was. Then, I talk about Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, along with Air New Zealand’s “Pink Flight” between San Francisco and Sydney. Some American gay men need to get over themselves. A new lesbian MP was sworn into Parliament yesterday. I talk a bit about that, and a little more about New Zealand’s structure. I’ll talk more about that more after the US primaries are over. There’s a little meta talk about running out of storage on Podomatic and what I might do about it. That pops again in the comments. Do Kiwis have sex more often than Americans? My one year anniversary of podcasting is the end of the month, so you still have time to send me a message. Ring my US listener line or email an MP3 to amerinz@podOmatic.com. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email a comment to comment(at]amerinz.com, or send a personal email to me (won’t be read on the podcast) to arthur{at)amerinz.com. You can also still use my other address, amerinz[at) yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 75 – Big Bucks
February 26, 2008 05:39 PM PST
On today’s episode, we have big money in New Zealand. That’s up first. Then, a German backpacker got in trouble and had to clean up. Another backpacker cleaned-up financially. Apple’s iPhone maybe illegal in Australia. It was the NZ Prime Minister’s birthday yesterday. The NZ election draws near, and that means some political talk, both about NZ and the US. Comments round out this episode. And of course you’ll find shownotes and links over at my blog, amerinz.com. Don’t forget to listen to or download my older episodes! My first anniversary of podcasting is at the end of March. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. February 22, 2008 01:52 AM PST
Today’s is a short episode, and that relates to my first topic: I’m running out of storage space on Podomatic, so I’ll soon take down my earliest episodes. If you ever wanted to listen to or download them, now’s the time! In about a week or so, I’ll be deleting my earliest episodes. Okay, so I messed up some things on the answers to the questions on the last episode. Deal with it! Did you know that the light in New Zealand and Australia is different? Researchers say that it is and matters. Our petrol is bloody expensive compared to America. A conference was held in New Zealand to ban cluster bombs. The USA boycotted the meeting. Surprise! The United Kingdom may soon cut off residency access to some Commonwealth citizens. Comments including a voice letter round out this episode. Nigel will be back! Don’t forget to listen to or download my older episodes! AmeriNZ 73 – Rambles
February 19, 2008 01:09 AM PST
Today’s episode is a ramble through miscellany, inspired by a recent podcast from Tom, the Ramble Redhead, in which he answered questions he received in an email. You’ll probably know me a bit better after listening. I also steal an idea from another of Tom’s podcasts: Playing a bunch of clips from other podcasters talking about me (because, ya know, I can). A little New Zealand news rounds out the episode, including some gay news. Then it’s comments to finish, along with an update to Episode 72. Clips featured are from: Feast of Fools, We’re Mean Because You’re Stupid, Ongline Podcast, My Gay Two Cents, ArcherRadio, Big Fatty Online, Ramble Redhead. AmeriNZ 72 – Reconciliation
February 15, 2008 02:45 AM PST
I begin with a discussion of the Australian Prime Minister finally saying “sorry” to Aborigines. After a sound clip and some explanation, I include the special perspective of a guest commentator, an Australian who talks about how this was received, then about the topic of compensation and more. How does all this compare to New Zealand? From there it’s on to a talk about iTunes and a real surprise. That gives me a chance to tell you a bit more about where I’m coming from. Comments round out today’s episode. From my perspective, this is what podcasts are all about—real people talking about what’s really happening, without the mainstream media filtering it. Let me know what you think. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email a comment to comment(at]amerinz.com, or send a personal email to me (won’t be read on the podcast) to arthur{at)amerinz.com. February 12, 2008 10:44 PM PST
Joining me today is Nik Dirga, a journalist and a fellow American ex-pat who lives in Auckland (which makes him an AmeriAuck) with his wife and son. This is the first time I’ve had a chat with another American living in Auckland. We talk about Nik’s experiences as an expat, what his impressions of New Zealand are, and how all that relates to others who may be thinking of becoming an expat. Check out Nik’s blog at http://spatulaforum.blogspot.com/, where there’s a link to his book, “Spatula Forum”. AmeriNZ 70 - Political clarity
February 07, 2008 10:55 PM PST
Archerr and Jason again join me for a political chat as we try and bring a little clarity to recent events. Mitt Romney has suspended his campaign: What does that means for the McCain and the Republicans? Super Tuesday produced no clear winner for Democrats, but does that mean that we’re heading for a brokered convention? Pundits and spin: There was plenty of that on the Super Tuesday coverage. Who might be the vice presidential candidates for the two parties? All that and plenty of opinion, too. You can find Archerr at http://www.archerradio.com/ and Jason at http://jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com/ Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email a comment to comment(at]amerinz.com, or send a personal email to me (won’t be read on the podcast) to arthur{at)amerinz.com. You can also still use my other address, amerinz[at) yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 69 – Changes
February 05, 2008 12:01 AM PST
America is ready for change. I wouldn’t change NZ for anywhere. A NZ-US free trade deal is in the works again. Or not. The changes to my blog have started. You’ll be able to relax. America desperately needs change, and what’s important is that we stay focused on that. New Zealand is a great place to live, so don’t believe all the propaganda about Australia being better for Kiwis. A NZ-US free trade deal as part of a package with other nations may be considered by the US. But it’s limited. Finally, I update the changes to my blog and give you some rest. I’m recording a new political discussion via Skype on Thurday, February 7, at 7:30pm EST (US) time. You're welcome to join us. AmeriNZ 68 - John Ong is everywhere
February 01, 2008 11:08 PM PST
New Zealand’s clean and green is a bit faded. A NZ website has a bout of homophobia, while an American comedian will go pink for New Zealand. If you’re happy and you know it, you’re probably not 44. I give you a chance to make fun of me—and John Ong is everywhere. The NZ government’s newest report on the environment, "Environment New Zealand 2007", has found things that aren’t right, and some that are, with NZ’s environment. An NZPA news story on two NZ websites carried two headlines, one homophobic. I complained. An American comedian will go pink, there’s happiness to come, and there are developments with my blog, new Frapprs and iTunes reviews. And new email addresses, too. I'm recording a new political discussion via Skype on Thurday, February 7 at 7:30pm EST (US) time. You're welcome to join us. AmeriNZ 67 - Summer Holiday
January 28, 2008 10:39 PM PST
This episode: Auckland had a holiday weekend. Thousands were amused, if only to have a three-day weekend in summer. Christian youth in New Zealand parachuted to music. New Zealand's election campaign is underway, sort of. First up today, I tell you about Auckland Anniversary Day, which was yesterday. That means talking a bit about why there are no provinces in New Zealand. But there's also something about how the day is celebrated, and how our own holiday weekend went. Some 27,000 youth took part in Parachute, a Christian, so-called, youth music festival. It's the largest outside the US. TV News coverage of it was a bit creepy, I thought. New Zealand's 2008 election campaign got underway today, sort of. The Leader of the Opposition gave a speech today, and tomorrow the Prime Minister will do the same. This is unusual, and I tell you what's behind it all. The real, official election campaign won't begin until later this year. A recently-passed law has given me pause. I tell you why, even though, on the whole, I think it's a good law. This also means talking a bit about recent NZ political history. In Australian news, the Aussie Foreign Minister is in the US and has said that his country's leaving Iraq won't harm US/Australian relations. Australia will also be keeping their citizenship tests. I'm not a big fan of such tests, and I'll tell you why. Comments create the opportunity for my podcast to be part of ArcherRadio. And more, of course. January 25, 2008 02:11 AM PST
A new study ranks New Zealand number 7 in the word. It doesn't matter on what, exactly, because New Zealanders are fascinated by what other people think of the country. A dead New Zealand Prime Minister is causing a stink in Northern Ireland. Kiwis love classic rock—or do they? Today is a mixed bag as I talk about a few small things about New Zealand. There are comments, of course, and I give you a brief update on something in in my professional life. There are even some updates from the pod-o-sphere. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 65 – Sweet and Sour
January 22, 2008 12:12 AM PST
Today is a both sweet and sour. I've just finished celebrating my birthday, which was really good. But today was the state funeral for Sir Edmund Hillary, which was sad. Today, I talk about both. First I talk about Sir Ed's funeral, and explain a little bit about how much he meant to New Zealanders. He was an extraordinary man, and we'll probably never again see anyone like him. Then it's on to a lighter topic—my birthday! What did Nigel get me, and what did I think about it? How did we celebrate? It's different from how I celebrated in Illinois. A few comments, another bald plea for reviews on iTunes, and that's it for this Tuesday edition. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 64 - Political Catch-up
January 18, 2008 03:14 AM PST
My last political podcast was before Christmas—which was before the Iowa Caucuses—and a lot has happened since then. Joining me to discuss all that today are Jason and Archerr from archerradio.com. I begin today with a brief explanation of what's going on for the benefit of non-American listeners. Then it's a brief recap of where we're at, especially the delegate totals. We then talk a bit about what's wrong with public opinion polls. This leads into a discussion of Super Tuesday and whether it will or won't be “all over” then. I get the chance to slag off my home state of Illinois for it's asinine primary system, before I go on to reveal who I voted for President in the Illinois Democratic Primary and why. I also talk a bit about how US citizens living overseas vote. The rest is a wide-ranging discussion of all sorts of things related to this campaign. Do Republicans hate each other? One leader says they do. Did you know that Mitt Romney has far higher negatives than Hillary Clinton? What about the economy? Iraq? They all get a look from us and we're not shy about saying what we think. You can find Jason's blog at http://jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com and Archerr's podcast is at http://www.archerradio.com. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ 63 – Home from home
January 14, 2008 08:12 PM PST
I'm back! Did you miss me? I missed doing my podcast, to be honest, and I'm certainly glad to be back. Today I'm going to tell you a bit about my recent trip to the US, then after comments I have a brief personal update, and all the usual contact details. I've called today's episode “Home from Home” because I'm back home from my home. I tell you about that trip and some of my impressions and observations, since this was my first trip back to the US in eight years. All things considered, the trip went pretty well (though I talk a bit about some things that didn't). I got done what I needed to, and I spent time with friends and family, which was great. I even met a real, live podcaster! I tell you what it feels like now, with this 12-year-old hold on my life now gone. There's a lot more about the trip, including more observations, on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where photos will be posted soon. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #62 – Holiday Time
December 21, 2007 09:33 PM PST
This is my last podcast for the year, so I start today by describing what a New Zealand Christmas is like for us. Then, I'll tell you a bit about my trip next week, and then after comments, I have a few special remarks. It's now summer in New Zealand, so Christmas is very different than what I grew up with in Illinois (no snow or cold). The Christmas we have isn't necessarily different from other Kiwis, but it's not all that different from other New Zealanders. I have all my arrangements sorted for my trip to Chicago next week. After comments, I have some special remarks for this last podcast of the year. I probably won't have another episode until Tuesday, January 15, 2008. I'm hoping to be able to record some audio while I'm away, and maybe I'll be able to post it before I get home to New Zealand, but don't count on that. Thanks for listening this year—I truly appreciate it! I'll be back with more in the New Year. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #61 – Election Time Begins
December 18, 2007 02:49 AM PST
This is the last chance I'll have for a political podcast before my big trip, and that also means it's the last chance to talk politics before the Iowa Caucuses or New Hampshire Primary. Jason joins me today as we talk about events in the campaigns, including Romney and Huckabee trying to out fundamentalist each other. Aren't they promoting a religious test for public office? Huckabee gets a a good look today, both for his call for quarantine of people with HIV/AIDS and is “fair tax”, which we think is anything but. A look at opinion polls and we wrap up for the day. I have a couple comments, a replay of my pretend commercial, and that's it. Friday will be a normal podcast, and will probably be my last until January. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #60 - Back again again
December 13, 2007 10:45 PM PST
My last episode was ten days ago. I start today to tell you why that is: I've been incredibly busy with work. I have a big trip coming up, and that will again mess up the podcast schedule. In the meantime, I'll have another political episode next week. Today I give some advice to would-be expats. Then I go over comments, the results of a recent poll on my blog and finally, I talk a bit about Australia's new Prime Minister. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #59 - Politics here and there
December 03, 2007 08:02 PM PST
It's now one month until the first real votes will be cast in the US Presidential candidate selection process, so I'm joined again today by Jason for a talk about all that. What's up with Huckabee? Is his star rising at Romney's expense? And does Romney stand for anything? On the Democratic side, the media should be more responsible in talking about falsehoods, especially those directed at Obama. Will Obama be hurt by such an early Iowa Caucus? Does the media shape what the campaign is about? In future episodes we'll talk about candidates and the campaigns as events unfold. I recorded this early because I knew I'd be too busy to record this week. Also, I'll soon be attending a candidate selection meeting here in New Zealand for our elections, which are also next year. I'll talk about that in an upcoming episode. Comments and the expat briefing will be on Friday. Shownotes with links will be on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. Jason's blog: http://jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com/ AmeriNZ #58 - A Busy Friday
November 29, 2007 09:19 PM PST
I have a lot of work to do right now, so this is just a short catch-up episode. First, some changes following the Australian election. Then, a newspaper poll in New Zealand contradicted what I said last week—or did it? Opinion polls are unreliable, and I tell you a bit about that. Since I'm an expat, it makes sense I should talk about that. On Fridays I'm going to give you the Expat Briefing, telling you one thing about being an expat that I haven't really talked about before. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, too, so feel free to ask! The current poll on my blog closes Tuesday morning NZ time. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #57 - Aussies and expats too
November 26, 2007 07:07 PM PST
The Australian election was held this past Saturday, and the changes were huge. But for GLBT people, the changes may not be so big. I also tell you a few more things about being an expat. Then, it's on to comments, including an audio comment from Nik-in-Paris, then the results of the latest poll on my blog. Finally, a listener tells me about a new sweepstakes where US listeners can enter to win a trip to New Zealand. The results from my latest blog poll are in. The question was: Regardless of what you actually have, do you think Christmas is better in hot weather or cold? There's a new poll question on my blog. Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #56 - Kiwi Thanksgiving
November 22, 2007 07:18 PM PST
Today I mostly tell you about my odd Thanksgiving Day in New Zealand, which was unusual, even for me. This gives me a chance to tell you about Auckland's poor public transport system. The US Ambassador to New Zealand is a good one. Then there's a visit to The Commonwealth: It suspended Pakistan until democracy is restored. Then, the Queen visited Uganda to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and visited people with HIV/AIDS. Finally, there's even something about the Australian elections, which will be held tomorrow. No comments today, but those will return on Tuesday, along with a wrap-up on the Australian election. The closing music today is “Regifting for the Holidays” by The Alice Project from the Podsafe Music Network (http://music.podshow.com/). Shownotes with links are on my blog, www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, you can email me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #55 - Being an expat
November 20, 2007 12:15 AM PST
Today I talk about being an expat, based largely on my own experience. I tell you somethings a new expat can expect to feel, both good and bad. I also tell you how it resolves itself, eventually turning into “home”. I also share some of my general feelings about being an expat and what that all means. After comments from Episode 54, I say a little about my Kiwi Thanksgiving. Finally it's a slightly revised version of my 30 second podcast promo. There may not be a podcast on Friday. We'll see. Show notes and links on my blog (www.amerinz.com), where you can leave a comment. Or, send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #54 – Big Giant Head
November 15, 2007 08:49 PM PST
I begin with a few words about last Tuesday's podcast. Then a couple domestic news items. It's confirmed: I'm a Big Giant Head, or I write like one. Then I talk a bit about the Australian election, and then how some Maori activists need to study public relations. I tell you about Episode 55, which will be largely based on a listener request. There probably won't be a podcast on Friday of next week. Be sure to vote in the poll on my blog! Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, send an email to me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. Closing music: “Bill O'Reilly: The Legend of the Big Giant Head” by David Ippolito from the Podsafe Music Network (http://music.podshow.com/music/listeners/artistdetails.php?BandHash=be76c0a80bc19965172835052214e004). AmeriNZ #53 – Politics with Jason
November 13, 2007 12:24 AM PST
Jason's back (he was last on Episode 20) for an extra-long episode where we have a wide-ranging talk about all sorts of things relating to politics. We begin by talking about a theme Jason sometimes writes about on his blog (http://jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com), namely the way soldiers in Iraq tend to be forgotten, and about how if this is a war, how come only the soldiers and their families are called to sacrifice? The poor treatment of the soldiers is the fault of both Bush and Congress, and this has nothing to do with supporting the war itself. Then it's on to a talk about Bush's assault on the Constitution and the foolishness of their actions. This leads into talk about torture and the “war” on terror. After a brief interruption, it's on to the 2008 election, first up Ron Paul and his weird use of Guy Fawkes to raise money. Are Hillary's “negatives” real? Guiliani and others get a mention, too. I'm not a big fan of the presidential selection system, but I see some positive possibilities with the change in primary dates. Jason's less convinced. I tell you what I think historians will say is the great tragedy of the Bush administration. We leave on a hopeful note, about how we can steer the world to a better place in many ways. Shownotes are comments on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or you can send an email to me at amerinz {at)yahoo.com, or ring my US listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #52 - Fast Friday
November 08, 2007 07:19 PM PST
Finally, a shorter episode! I recorded today during my lunch break (don't worry, there aren't any eating sounds). Today I catch-up on the things I didn't time for over the past week, like comments, but I also give you updates on some things I've talked about on earlier episodes. Any Australians want to take part in an episode? Let me know. I tell you about some upcoming episodes, and a couple things about earlier ones. What's my most-downloaded episode to date? Leave a comment on my blog, www.amerinz.com, or ring my US-based listener line, 206-339-8413. You can also send an email to me at amerinz[at}yahoo.com. November 05, 2007 07:40 PM PST
Oh! Canada! It's an extra long episode today, as I talk with Mark from one of my favourite sites, Slap Upside the Head (http://www.slapupsidethehead.com/). Mark is Canadian, currently living in Montreal. We talk about all sorts of things, like his growing up in Canada, and something of what the country is like. Are gay rights really better in Canada? What can the Canadian experience teach American activists? We fit in some talk about terrorism, the influence of right wing religionists, and even sports! Shownotes with links are on my blog at www.amerinz.com, where you can leave a comment. Or, call my US listener line on 206-339-8413. And, you can always send an email to me at amerinz(at]yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #50 – Fabulous
November 02, 2007 04:26 AM PDT
This is the 50th episode of the AmeriNZ Podcast! Today is also the twelfth anniversary of my arrival in New Zealand to live, and it's the date Nigel and I take as our anniversary, too. Today, I share some memories of my arrival in NZ. I also give you a behind-the-scenes look at what went into the creation of my podcast. I then have comments, before moving on to some time with Nigel. Intermixed are phone messages I received, plus plenty of things I've never played publicly before. Thanks for your support over the first 50 episodes! I hope to make the next 50 better and better. You can leave a comment at my blog, www.amerinz.com, or you can send an email to me at amerinz(at}yahoo.com, or you can call my listener line on 206-339-8413. AmeriNZ #49 - HalloweeNZ
October 31, 2007 01:28 PM PDT
A short special extra episode today (so that Friday's is episode 50, to be honest). Do we have Halloween in New Zealand? What about trick-or-treating? Or, is it all just “creeping Americanism”? After that, I tell you about the promotion of a gay cabinet minister. Comments, a couple announcements, and that's it. Be back tomorrow with episode 50. You can leave a comment on my lister line: 206-339-8413, or visit my site at www.amerinz.com, where there are links to the items mentioned. AmeriNZ #48 - Preachers Kids
October 29, 2007 06:07 PM PDT
This is a special episode, and one of my favourites yet. I'm joined by two other gay podcasters who, like me, are preachers' kids: Tim Corrimal (Go Rainbow Radio and There Are Some Who Call Me Tim) and Eric (Confessions of a Southern Boy in Yankee Land). We have a wide-ranging conversation about being preachers' kids who grew up gay. What's it like for a gay kid growing up, literally, in the church? Were we affected by Biblical passages used against gay people? How do we feel about religion now? We share some stories from our growing up, talk about some differences between “mainstream” and “evangelical” protestants, and plenty of other things, too. This conversation was too interesting to me to cut into two parts, so I hope you'll forgive the longer length episode. Complete shownotes and links on my blog, www.amerinz.com. October 25, 2007 08:59 PM PDT
I'd planned a special episode for today, but it didn't happen, and it's evidence of how hard it is for me to arrange a Skype conference with people in North America. So, it's just an ordinary episode today. Still, I had my first voicemail message! I tell you about the upcoming podcast schedule and how episode 50 will be on Friday, November 2 (the day before in North America), which will be a very special day for other reasons. You can leave a message about that on my new listener comment line (206-339-8413), or you can email an MP3 file to me at amerinz(at]podomatic.com. The Prime Minister is about to reshuffle her cabinet, and I tell you a little about that, what it means in American terms, and then I talk a bit about the upcoming US elections and how I'm able to vote in US elections. Leave a voicemail on my US-based comment line (206-339-8413), leave a comment on my blog at www.amerinz.com, or send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com (if you put “comment” in the subject line I'll read it on the podcast). AmeriNZ #46 – Continuation
October 22, 2007 10:59 PM PDT
This week is an upside down episode as I go over comments first. That's because of the feedback I got about continuing my podcast. I AM continuing, by the way. After that, it's on to a discussion of our Labour Holiday weekend and some of the things we got up to. I have some interesting guests coming up in the next few weeks, beginning the end of this week or next week. Have a topic you want to hear about? Let me know. Leave a comment at www.amerinz.com, or send an email to me at amerinz[at)yahoo, com (if you put “comment” in the subject line, I'll know to read it on the podcast. AmeriNZ #45 – Carcast
October 18, 2007 07:01 PM PDT
It's a mixed bag today, starting with my second “carcast”. I give you some updates to Tuesday's episode, then it's a bit of rant about bad customer service, and then I share some of my recent thinking about the podcast. From there it's back in the “studio” as I share five things you don't know about me (and challenge other podcasters to do the same) and then go over comments. Shownotes on my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/), where you can leave a comment, or send an email to me at amerinz[at}yahoo.com (if you put “comment” in the subject line, I'll read it on the podcast. AmeriNZ #44 – Weird
October 15, 2007 09:42 PM PDT
There was weird news about a “terrorism-related” raid in New Zealand but, at the moment, it should all be taken with a grain of salt. The local election results are in. I tell you a bit about that. Then there's a weird TV commercial running in New Zealand. Leave a comment at my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or send an email to amerinz[at)yahoo.com; if you put “Comment” in the subject line, I'll know to read it on the podcast. AmeriNZ #43 – Votes and Books
October 09, 2007 12:36 AM PDT
First up, I have some bits of good news to report. Then I talk about our local elections, which are drawing to a close. We've already mailed in our ballots, but there's a huge concern that many people won't bother. Why is the turnout low? Then it's on to a discussion of some New Zealand authors who were featured in a recent poll on my blog. Comments then provide me with more opportunities to comment on things. I say “um” a lot today. I have no idea why. Shownotes with links at my main blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/. Send an email to me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com, and if you put “Comment” in the subject line I'll read it on the podcast; otherwise, I won't. AmeriNZ #42 – Compromise
October 01, 2007 09:40 PM PDT
I jokingly talk about changing my podcast's name to get higher in rankings (yes, I was kidding...). I'm tired. The clocks have changed, which I say is unrelated. Still, things are going well. Mainly, today I talk about ENDA, compromise with conservatives, and troubles within the fundie right wing. I tell you a little more about my past, as well as my political beliefs. The rest of this episode is apparently the Eric Cast, sort of, as I talk about our war, uh rivalry, uh fellow podcastship-ness. Or whatever. Comments let me comment, too. There might not be a podcast on Friday. I've now passed six months of podcasting. Leave a comment on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or send an email to me at amerinz(at]yahoo.com. If you put “Comment” in the subject line, I'll read it on the 'cast. AmeriNZ #41 - Saturday Subjects
September 28, 2007 11:17 PM PDT
Today was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, and I put together a short podcast to keep up with things. First up it's a brief look at Dominion Day and the evolution of New Zealand from colony to country. Bush's bonehead promise to veto S-Chip leads me into a short talk abut healthcare in New Zealand. Then it's comments and a new Frappr Mappr. Shownotes with links at my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, where you can leave me a comment. Or send an email to me at amerinz{at]yahoo.com. If you put “Comment” in the subject line, I'll read it on the podcast. AmeriNZ #40 – No Way
September 23, 2007 03:14 PM PDT
I'm FINALLY back, after no Internet access and some other barriers to podcasting. I talk about that first. Then, after a few things going on around here, it's on to some things in the news--climate change, wacky christians and indigenous rights. The issues just keep coming! After comments, it's a couple things leftover from episode 39. If you'd like to comment by email send it to me at amerinz(at]yahoo.com and put “Comment” in the subject line so I'll know to read it on the podcast. Shownotes will be posted on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com AmeriNZ #39 – Friends and Neighbours
September 11, 2007 04:17 AM PDT
AmeriNZ #39 – Friends and Neighbours It's been a very busy few days since Episode 38. Among other things, I was a guest onCallBox7 (http://callbox7.com/). I also made my first-ever guest post on another site, Slap Upside the Head (http://www.slapupsidethehead.com/). Today, Canadian Prime Minister Stepehen Harper addressed the Australian Parliament, the first Canadian Prime Minister to do so. He made some comparisons of Canada with Australia that were more apt as a comparison of Canada with New Zealand. He also talked about 9/11. Meanwhile, NZ and the US have taken small steps toward closer relations. Also, a foreign government hacked NZ government computers. Some famous people died. Results of my movie poll, feedback and more. Leave a comment on my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/) or send an email to me at amerinz{AT) yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #38 - Here and There
September 07, 2007 02:31 AM PDT
Today's episode is probably the last of the shortened ones. At the end of a bad week, I talk about the loss of our cat at 3:22, then go on to things in the news at 6:50. Finally, it's comments at 10:49, and I give more details about some of the topics raised. I also add a couple last minute topics of my own. Didn't have time to double check this episode—hope it's okay! Shownotes and links on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or send a comment to me at amerinz(at]yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #37 – Games
September 03, 2007 11:56 PM PDT
This is a relatively short episode, in part because this is the busiest week of the month for me. I recorded this in Garage Band, and there were a few “issues” I noticed when I was done. Anyway, I have two topics. First, at 1:30, I talk a little about the meeting of APEC in Sydney, including some audio. Then, at 11:55 I talk about the Rugby World Cup, that starts this week. It's a Very Big Deal in this part of the world. Finally, it's comments at 16:12. There's a new poll on my blog: What's your favourite movie made in New Zealand? Links and comments at my blog, amerinz.blogspot.com. You can send an email to me at amerinz@yahoo.com AmeriNZ #36 - Forever Young
August 31, 2007 04:20 AM PDT
I had some computer issues this week, and I was a little under the weather earlier in the week. So, this episode is a bit of a mixed bag. First up, there's a new tourism commercial for NZ coming soon, and it's sparked a small controversy. I talk about that at 4.28. At 6:32, I talk about the poll on my blog for your favourite Kiwi, and tell you who those people were. Around 10:23 I give a little more—and simpler—information about the structure of local government. What do Australians think of America and Americans? At 11:59 I'll tell you. Comments are up next at 15:37. Then I tell you why I didn't podcast on Tuesday; that's at 23:06. Shownotes and links are on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, where you can leave a comment. Or, send an email to me at amerinz[at)yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #35 - Election
August 23, 2007 11:40 PM PDT
I begin today by updating earlier topics. That’s at 1:58. Then at 7:47 I talk about the extended topic for today, New Zealand’s local elections. Finally, it’s comments at 15:05. Complete shownotes with links on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, where you can leave a comment or take part in the current poll. You can also send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #34 - Knocks
August 21, 2007 01:37 AM PDT
Today was a warm, sunny, beautiful late winter day in Auckland, and I’m back—and probably back on my normal schedule, too. I’ll talk a little bit more about that, and other things going on with us, starting at 1:19. Tony Orlando is touring New Zealand at the moment for the first time in his career. At 3:10 I’ll update a couple of the things I talked about last week. New Zealand and Australia have issues at the moment. I’ll tell you about that in the extended topic, at 5:58. Finally, it’s on to comments at 10:35. I put a new poll on my blog, “Who’s your favourite Kiwi?” Vote for as many as you want. It’s completely anonymous. Links in the shownotes on my blog (http://amerinz.blogsot.com). Leave me a comment on my blog and take part in the poll. Send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #33 – Religious Right

There was no podcast on Friday because I simply ran out of time. It’s possible that I also won’t have time to record this coming Friday. Should I keep the twice-weekly schedule, or does the sort of limited scope of this podcast makes more sense in weekly doses? What do you think? Obviously I’ll do what makes sense for me, but I’d really like to know what you’d prefervote in the anonymous poll on my blog (amerinz.blogspot.com). Today I go over a selection of recent news stories about or affecting New Zealand, all of which have something to do with US influence on New Zealand. That starts at the 2:03. Then, I’ll go into more detail about one of those stories on the religious right in New Zealand, my main topic today, at 8:55. Finally, it’s comments at 15:43. Please leave a comment on my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/) or send an email to me at amerinz[at}yahoo.com, and be sure to vote in the poll at the top right of my blog. August 06, 2007 10:07 PM PDT
After a journey through comments, it’s today’s Tuesday Talk segment. Today’s guests are Dawn and Darren, an American Expat couple in Wellington. We had a lot of Skype problems, but persevered. I tried to fix some of it in the editing. What made them move to New Zealand? What do they miss about America? What couldn’t they do without from New Zealand? They share some of their observations about New Zealand, Wellington, music, food, rugby and more. Will they stay in New Zealand permanently? Dawn and Darren’s blog is called Kia Ora…Bitches! (located at http://dawnanddarren.blogspot.com/). Leave a comment at my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/), or send an email to me at amerinz[at)yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #31 – Weather
August 03, 2007 04:47 AM PDT
What’s the weather like in Auckland? Well, it’s way better than Chicago! I tell you what it’s like here, what that means and, well, how much better it is than Chicago. A revelation about how Kiwis are in winter! But what does that mean, practically speaking? Ice scrapers? Changes are coming for the Tuesday edition of the podcast: Conversations, hope. Fridays will be as they have been. It’s an adventure! From there, it’s comments. Then, a look at what I take from download statistics. Or, maybe I shouldn’t—what do you think? A big shout out (and much love) to Tom the Ramble Redhead (http://rambleredhead.blogspot.com/). Please leave a comment at my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/) or send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com (anonymous comments are okay, and emails are kept confidential). AmeriNZ #30 – Tuesday Talk
July 30, 2007 08:31 PM PDT
I begin this episode with a brief look at comments, then it’s on to today’s main segment, a conversation with a listener, Yorky, who was back in New Zealand briefly. We talk about a lot of things, including how he and his partner, who’s an American, tried to live in the US but had to come up with a creative solution to be together. Yorky also offers a listener’s perspective on podcasts. Special mentions go to Matt Blender’s Okay So Radio (http://okaysoradio.libsyn.com/) and, of course, to Archerr (http://www.archerradio.com/). Will Yorky and his partner return to New Zealand some day? Being new to recording using my digital recorder, I neglected to put in fresh batteries, so quite a bit was lost. Sorry. Leave me a comment at my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/), or send an email to me at amerinz{at)yahoo.com. AmeriNZ # 29 – Race
July 26, 2007 11:07 PM PDT
To understand New Zealand, you need to understand that it’s a bicultural country within a multicultural society. This all comes about because of listener comments, which is where I begin this episode (after introducing probably the most common phrase in Te Reo Maori, Kia Ora). I compare and contrast race relations in New Zealand with those of the US and Australia, and I provide an historical context by reading an excerpt on Americans and Maori during World War 2 (from http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/war/us-forces-in-new-zealand/americans-and-maori). I haven’t personally seen the sort of racism in New Zealand that I’ve seen in America, but that certainly doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues to be dealt with here. AmeriNZ #28 – Language
July 24, 2007 01:20 AM PDT
It’s a short episode today. It’s Maori Language Week (http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/maori-language-week) this week, an annual event celebrating and promoting the Maori language. This year is special, celebrating 20 years since Te Reo Maori was declared an official language of New Zealand, alongside English. I begin by talking a little bit about the language from my perspective as a Pakeha immigrant, including talking about how relatively easy the language is to pronounce, if you try—and everyone should. The effort, even among tourists, is appreciated. But I don’t go into cultural details because that’s a topic in itself. For more information, you can go to the site of the Maori Language Commission (http://www.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz/). For even more, see “100 Maori words every New Zealander should know” (http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/maori-language-week/100-maori-words). Comments are next, and, of course, I expand on things in earlier podcasts. A new guest will be on my podcast soon, possibly Friday, maybe Tuesday. AmeriNZ #27 – Nigel Too
July 20, 2007 05:29 AM PDT
Nigel’s back! Nigel joins me again today. He’s recovering from a cold, one he seems to have shared with me. Please pardon the coughs (I tried to edit some out). We take listener questions as our starting point, then I ask Nigel’s perspective on other listener questions I’ve already answered. Both provide loads of new information, including especially Nigel’s perspective on my early days in New Zealand. We end with an email from a listener with a question about New Zealand in the news, then a listener comment from Japan. There’s even a (very) brief appearance from one of Nigel’s sisters. AmeriNZ #26 – Good and Bad
July 16, 2007 10:49 PM PDT
So far, I’ve talked about good things about New Zealand (and I think there are a lot). So, maybe, out of balance, I should talk about the bad things. Trouble is, to me there really isn’t anything that’s all that bad. Maybe I could mention the negativity among some people. Or maybe news media sloppiness, or the weird crusades of NZ’s biggest newspaper, Auckland’s New Zealand Herald. For me, that’s about it. New Zealand’s Parliamentary sessions are now streamed on the Internet at www.parliament.govt.nz. I catch up on comments from the past two episodes, and tell another new story, this time centred on San Francisco. The final air conditioning update. AmeriNZ #25 – Clean Up
July 13, 2007 03:49 AM PDT
It’s episode 25 and my first car-cast! I feel like JayT. Actually, it’s the first time I’ve recorded outside of my house. A bit noisy in spots, but these things can be sometimes. I begin by talking about why I’m, in the car today. Then it’s on to our storm damage (photo on my blog), and dealing with getting it fixed. I talk about returning to the part-time job after being away for three weeks, and the things that have happened since. I also talk about puppy training, including some things that surprised me. It’s not all about me, though, as I talk a bit about Ponsonby and the value of non-mega bookstores. That goes into a mention of the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car” (http://www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar) which I heard mentioned on the Democracy Now! podcast (http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/04/13/1421243&mode=thread&tid=25) No discussion of comments this week, since I was driving while recording. Special shout-outs this week to Archerr (http://www.archerradio.com), Arick West of the The Beat SF (http://thebeatsf.com/), CallBox 7 (http://callbox7.com) and Kalvin of Hello Waffles (http://hellowaffles.blogspot.com). The ending song is “True Love Waits” by Tom Smith (http://music.podshow.com/music/listeners/artistdetails.php?BandHash=b5c5fa9f9d10d395fc9f53e573b0dab4) from the Podsafe Music Network. Leave a comment on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to me at amerinz[at}yahoo.com AmeriNZ 24 - Stormy
July 10, 2007 03:02 AM PDT
The bad weather is continuing in New Zealand, and today it’s affecting the top of the North Island (and the weather has become worse since I recorded this). Last week’s bad weather in Taranaki was worse than first thought. Listener comments give me the chance to expand a little on some of last episode’s points, then listener Walt asks some questions that I haven’t answered before, and I spend most of this episode answering them. You’ll learn a bit more about me as an expat, and maybe a bit more about what that feels like to me. The ending song is by the same group that ended last Friday’s episode. It’s called “A Mini Constellation Remix #1” and it’s by Spring Heeled Jacks Original Swinging Jass Band, part of the Podsafe Music Network. Complete shownotes and comments are amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to amerinz[at}yahoo.com. July 06, 2007 02:39 AM PDT
Today I talk about preparedness for an emergency, which is important in a geologically active country like New Zealand. This was prompted by a mailer from the government we received the other day. The “Get Ready, Get Thru” campaign (www.getthru.govt.nz) is designed to help people prepare for natural disaster. I talk about some of what that means for ordinary New Zealanders. As it happens, some unusual tornadoes struck New Zealand this week. I also talk a bit about how it was for me, coming from the Midwest of America where tornadoes and winter storms were the main threat—apart from the New Madrid Fault. A theory about problems with uploading. Incidental music at the beginning is by Nick Murray from the Podsafe Music Network, and the closing song is by Spring Heeled Jacks Original Swinging Jass Band, also from the Podsafe Music Network. Complete shownotes and comments at amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to ameriz{at}yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #22 - Commonwealth
July 03, 2007 01:15 AM PDT
I begin today with a few short comments on Episode 21. Then, it’s on to an explanation of the Commonwealth of Nations, which New Zealand is part of. From there, it’s a discussion of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand, the country’s highest military decoration, which is being awarded for the first time since World War 2. I play a clip of DjDavidJ from Archerr’s show, then make a couple comments about Canada, New Zealand and Australia—and where I fit into all that. Finally, a rant about Bush commuting Scooter Libby’s sentence. To close the show, “Death of Democracy” by 37Hz, from the Podsafe Music Network. Shownotes and comments at http://amerinz.blogspot.com/ or send an email to me at amerinz[at} yahoo.com AmeriNZ #21 – In the News
June 29, 2007 03:18 PM PDT
This episode is a bit longer than I’d planned, but it’s been a busy week in our household, with a new puppy and new heating system. And, I haven’t recorded “live” in a week and a half, so there are a lot of comments to get through. They give me the chance to tell a few stories from my past, including a sordid one from my only trip to Atlanta. In the main news, apparently the White House is “seriously considering” a stopover in New Zealand for George Bush at the conclusion of the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum in Sydney in September.I have mixed feeling about it. An online poll of 1,977 people (at the time I visited) who chose to participate at the New Zealand Herald website had 71% of respondents against a visit, and only 29% for it. The poll is totally unscientific, as the Herald admits, since it includes only people who choose to participate. Nevertheless, it’s a huge spread between the two. A special shout-out to a listener and MySpace friend. I’m also on Facebook, among other things. Friend me if you want. Show notes and comments are at my main blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or you can send an email to amerinz[at]yahoo.com AmeriNZ #20 – Cabbages and Kings
June 25, 2007 09:33 PM PDT
Work is being done at the house today, so I can’t record a regular episode. Instead, I’m posting a chat I had with my friend Jason (his blog is at http://jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com/). We’ve been friends for many years. Is such a long-term friendship as rare as it seems to us? We also talk about moving beyond high school, which is related to us still being friends after all these years. Jason also talks a bit about his travels, especially his trip to New Zealand last year. Leave a comment at my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or send an email to me at amerinz[at]yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #19 – A Special Guest
June 21, 2007 03:09 PM PDT
Joining me today is my very special guest—my partner Nigel! Mike Hipp of www.podcastsoup.net wins the imaginary prize for guessing correctly. We begin by talking about Nigel’s childhood in small-town New Zealand and what it was like. What was the first thing Nigel bought with his own money? And what was the first record he bought? He then explains some of how New Zealand has changed, sometimes radically, in his lifetime. What’s it like for Nigel being Maori in modern New Zealand? Is there racism? What about friction between Maori and other Polynesians? Nigel also shares his impressions of the US, a place he loves to visit. What were some of the things he noticed? What American thing would he like to have in New Zealand? Then we talk about some silly stuff, including shout outs to Archerr (www.archerradio.com/), Tom the Ramble Redhead (http://rambleredhead.blogspot.com/) and Kalvin of Hello Waffles (http://hellowaffles.blogspot.com/), whom Nigel doesn’t even know. Of course Nigel was just kidding about Nik in Paris’ (http://www.nikinparis.com/) comment on Episode 18. Leave a comment at my blog (http://amerinz.blogspot.com/), or send an email to me at amerinz[at]yahoo.com. You can send an email to Nigel there, too, and I’ll forward it. Probably. AmeriNZ #18 – Tuesday Ketchup
June 19, 2007 03:42 AM PDT
A power failure tonight delayed this podcast. Very rare, but it happens. This episode has nothing to do with ketchup (or catsup, or tomato sauce, as it’s called in New Zealand). It’s a miscellaneous show. I talk about how local governments are elected, and about what Kiwis mean when they talk about a city like Auckland or whatever. Lots of comments, including some I missed from the Podomatic site. A few odds and ends at the end of the podcast. Did I mention that I have a very special guest on my Friday podcast? AmeriNZ #17 - Happy Birthday Magna Carta
June 15, 2007 02:10 AM PDT
I begin talking about Magna Carta on its 792nd birthday. From there, it’s on to an overview of New Zealand’s government as I get ready to start talking about how Parliament is elected. What are Kiwis’ most popular movies of all time? The worst? Check out the lists at flicks.co.nz. Comments are followed by my take on personal responsibility as the flipside of personal freedom. Should drugs be legalised? Finally, I have an announcement about an upcoming episode. Leave a comment on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to me at amerinz{at}yahoo.com. AmeriNZ #16 – Feedback Interaction
June 12, 2007 02:25 AM PDT
Today I talk mostly about feedback, both by email and the comments from Episode 15. First, though, I clarify a couple things about the “No Nukes” topic, inspired in part by the summary on podcastsoup.net An expat American emailed me with some confusion over the extent of poverty in New Zealand. There isn’t homelessness in New Zealand as Americans understand the word, but there are poor people. I explain how the request for donations addresses that (or doesn’t). Overall, the poverty in New Zealand is different than in America, but it may be similar to American cities of a similar size. After that, there’s an extended discussion of the comments from Episode 15, one of which is quite long. These provide me with the opportunity to go into more detail about the topics discussed. What about personal responsibility? Do people who bring harm onto themselves through bad deeds still deserve the full support of society? New people on my Frappr! I also give a little more info about what’s coming in future podcasts. AmeriNZ #15 - No Nukes
June 08, 2007 02:11 AM PDT
Twenty years ago today New Zealand became the first country in the world to go nuclear-free. Had the US acted differently, this may not have lasted. The French government used blackmail to change New Zealand policy, the US could have done that, too. There’s a weird audio glitch about half way through—I didn’t edit it to make it weird. I was on two other podcasts this week: ArcherRadio (www.archerradio.com) and There Are Some Who Call Me Tim (timcorrimal.com). If you’re Liberal or progressive, you MUST give a listen to Callbox 7 (callbox7.com). Please check out my friend Jason’s blog at jasonsviewfromdc.blogspot.com. May 31, 2007 08:55 PM PDT
I recorded this episode early so that I could post it on Friday. I’ll talk about comments on Episode 13 and this episode next time. Monday is Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday in New Zealand, even though her real birthday is April 21. It’s the only public holiday between Easter Weekend and Labour Day at the end of October. Queen’s Birthday was a kind of gay holiday, a kind of second birthday for everyday queens. That’s probably less common than it used to be. But it’s still a day off for everyone. May 28, 2007 11:00 PM PDT
I’m not superstitious but I still do certain things, like throw spilled salt over my shoulder. I also have an episode number 13. I start with some quasi-meta stuff about rankings and iTunes comments. New Zealand Music charts will include legal digital downloads from this week. A researcher has found that the NZ accent is getting stronger and more distinct, despite globalisation. Complete shownotes and links at my blog, amerinz.blogspot.com. Send an email to amerinz[at]yahoo.com AmeriNZ #12 – Moving On
May 25, 2007 04:13 AM PDT
We’re doing much better, but today was difficult for me. Everything has been made better by the support we’ve had, including from all my new friends from my blog and podcast. Should we animal lovers be a little more upfront? Vicious dogs: They’re usually made so by their owners. To get my podcast back on track, I talk a bit about Westminster-style parliamentary systems. In some ways, they’re much stronger than an American-style system. The exit of the UK’s Tony Blair is put into context of parliamentary systems, which opens up talk of New Zealand’s application of the system. Parliamentary systems like New Zealand has are more consultative, and so, do things that generally have more broad-based support. Then, commentapalooza! A special appeal ends this episode—I hope you consider it. Mentioned this episode:
AmeriNZ #11 – I’m still here
May 21, 2007 07:26 PM PDT
This is a short episode, because I’m running out of bandwidth (resets around the 23rd), and also because I’m talking about the sudden death of our dog this past Friday. I explain how Saibh (rhymes with “five”) fit into our lives, and some of what she meant to us. In some ways we’ve been through this before, but this feels more intense. We’re trying to adjust. To avoid ending on a down note, there’s a competition for Kiwi show polish that will give away a trip for two to New Zealand. You can enter at http://www.kiwi100yearcelebration.com/. Please leave a comment on my blog, http://amerinz.blogspot.com/, or send an email to me at amerinz[at]yahoo.com AmeriNZ #10 – Civil Unions and Stuff
May 14, 2007 10:38 PM PDT
New Zealand civil unions are marriages in all but name. All marriages and civil unions are basically property contracts. But the protections are important. Married/civil unioned couples in New Zealand don’t file joint tax returns. Wage and salary earners don’t need to file tax returns. Taxes pay for nearly everything—including health. Property taxes, called rates, pay mostly for local amenities and infrastructure maintenance. Comments are commented on, and a short review of my weekend. Please leave a comment at amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to amerinz@yahoo.com AmeriNZ #9 – Loose Ends
May 11, 2007 06:18 AM PDT
This week, I tie up some loose ends left hanging from Tuesday’s show, and Ramble Redhead’s show, too. You’ll learn some more about me, how I think and how I am. I’m honest about how I feel about several things, all of which lays the groundwork for future episodes. Shownotes and comments at amerinz.blogspot.com, or send an email to amerinz@yahoo.com Special mention in this episode: Nik in Paris (http://www.nikinparis.com/) iSay iSay iSay (http://www.isayisayisay.info/) And commentors and Frappr Mapprs AmeriNZ #8 – Talk with Archerr
May 07, 2007 10:19 PM PDT
Shocking revelation in this episode! I took a break from work to talk with Archerr, one of my must-listen-to podcasters. Despite my having had too much caffeine, we talked of many things: Music—80s music in particular (apologies to Tim Corrimal for getting his past guests mixed up), where Auckland is, north and south in the mind’s eye, names for the voices for in-car GPS systems. Driving on the other side of the road. Talking to the past and the future. Why no photo of Arthur on the blog? Arthur reveals some shocking information—well, it surprises Archerr, at least. Frappr comes up, as does blog posting and stuff beyond podcasting. Tech talk about digital video and still cameras. Be sure to check out my guest spot on Ramble Redhead’s podcast (rambleredhead.blogspot.com). Shownotes and comments are at amerinz.blogspot.com. Send an email to amerinz@yahoo.com AmeriNZ #7 – Secrets
May 04, 2007 04:42 AM PDT
There are some things that bloggers and podcasters don’t, or shouldn’t, reveal. Many don’t use their real names (I do), and many use a nickname (well, I do that, too). I won’t talk specifics about how I make money, but there are other things to say about it. Neil Finn is a doofus. The American Ambassador says interesting things. Comments galore (I loves me my comments!). Finally, a mashup—the first mashup I’ve made (I call it ArcherRadio vs. OMD). Yeah, I know that these things are usually done to a dance music beat, but hey, can you imagine anything but 80s music for Archerr? Shownotes with links and comments are at amerinz.blogspot.com. April 30, 2007 10:45 PM PDT
Don’t talk about religion or politics?! What else could a couple proud liberals talk about? Well, there’s plastic grocery bags, JoeMyGod, Australia and much more. Is America doing penance? Is American democracy doomed? A frank and opinionated conversation—as you’d expect. We had some Skype problems that I tried to edit out, and my sound levels drop toward the end for some reason. April 26, 2007 08:57 PM PDT
This week I talk about New Zealand as it relates to Australia. This was motivated, in part, by Anzac Day bloggage. Australia and New Zealand are very different from one another. Some people want a common currency, others want total union. Neither is going to happen. I follow up on that survey about gay neighbours, and I’m even more suspicious of the numbers. JoeMyGod responds to my comment. Can’t avoid mentioning racism. Australian dubbing of TV commercials is goofy. There are some changes in my life ahead, which don’t really affect this podcast. But should I add another show? Mentioned on this show:
